you may want to consider jewelry consignment...may or may not get you more cash monies, but i think they'll meet with you to give you an idea of what they think they can get for it, how much their cut is, etc

Met with 'em. I figured I'd try this first, see what I can get. If not, I'll go the consignment route.

Everybody else knows it...oh what the hell...

Got engaged in Oct. '08. Broke it off in Feb. '09. I've had the ring since. We finally broke up back just before Thanksgiving. Just now getting around to selling it.

Probably not a complete thread, but I did my share of bitching (and probably more than my share) about it. Glad to be done with it, and will be glad to get this ring out of my possession.

Not all women want something obscenely expensive.

However, any ring I buy must have been part of at least 2 failed relationships so this one would not work for me.

Goddamn, man...it was twice as much ring as she wanted. I ain't got 6 grand to drop on a ring.

Bitch got a ring from her now fiance...and it was a cheap piece.

Going to agree with paerabol in saying that you got out of this good. She sounds like a potential cheating ho.

I'm just a guy, but I think that's a cool lookin' ring. Way more character than half the stuff out there.

Dude, like she starts dating this guy a month after we broke up...he gave her a ring like a couple of weeks later. According to other friends, he was a complete loser in high school.

some advice...

its a nice ring, very pretty. if you want to try a new angle on selling it, i would try not calling it an engagement ring. i'd say something like its a family piece or you inherited it from a family member. people just have bad feelings about "engagement" ring.

the ring could certainly be worn as a right hand ring or just a nice piece, not just engagement. i think with that angle you might be able to sell it directly to a woman who falls in love with it.

i dont know what is available in the raleigh area but some antique type shops will sell jewelry on consignment or buy it from you & just resell it. i was at one such shop in san diego not too long ago & got some nice bracelets. there was also a diamond bracelet there that was going for $2k & lots of rings with precious stones.

just a thought

Thanks for the tips! I'm wondering if this would be foolish to advertise on Craigslist; more exposure, but at the same time, it's an item that would be easy to rip off. Guess if I kept meeting places public, then it would be different.

There's one jewelry consignment shop in Cary, and I've been to see them. But, what they wanted to buy it for was a little less than I wanted to part with it for. They have a 100% markup.

First off...Kudos on not taking the low road here.
TRUST ME!!!... Keep being the Bigger man (Yes I know somebody in the peanut gallery is gonna twist that statement... )

In 5 years, you will feel so much better about yourself if you do. Not to mention, when her "ahem" marriage blows up...and it will..you will enjoy her crying about how she ruined her life that much more.
And do not even THINK about taking her back...EVER!!!

Now as for the ring... I keep putting myself in your place and I think that the best possible thing you can do is put this in consignment.
And here is why..

If you sell it, you have to keep re-living this hell of a relationship. If they sell it, you are done and will get a check at some point.

If you sell it, people want to know the history and why you are selling it. Trust me when I say that when selling a ring... it being from a broken engagement is NOT a selling point. If they sell it, all that is a mute point and the sell will be a lot more like the sell when you bought it.

Also..you have limited exposure and a limited ability to advertise..they will be much better able to do that.

Look..I know you want the most money you can get..but my personal opinion is that the money you lose is so WORTH IT when you consider what you get back by letting them sell it...especially when you consider what you will finally have to agree too in order to sell it yourself.

has the ring been appraised? you could spend a little money on the appraisal & use that to sell it on ebay or craigslist. that way people dont have to "see the receipts" or something.

also you could encourage someone to get their own appraisal done & just meet them at the place. i understand why consignment is not attractive for you, so i suggest just making up a story about the ring. say your grandma left it to you or you found it while cleaning out your moms old stuff. if someone wants a story give em one, who cares if you lie. its comes down to someone wanting to buy the ring not the story behind it
