CGI doesn't count. Choices:
The Little Mermaid (1989) The Rescuers Down Under (1990) Beauty and the Beast (1991) Aladdin (1992) The Lion King (1994) Pocahontas (1995) The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) Hercules (1997) Mulan (1998) Tarzan (1999)
I gotta go with Aladdin first, then Lion King. What brought this up was me stumbling across a critic saying that Beauty and the Beast was the best of that era, because Beauty wasn't the generic damsel in distress type. Lame. 6/21/2010 2:09:51 AM |

Little Mermaid counts in that era, because it was the first in the resurgence of Disney back to making awesome movies.
I mean, compare the movies from Little Mermaid on to the ones from the previous 15 years

The Lion King and Tarzan
The Lion King was overall the best imo. Everything about it was done very well. It's one of the best movies of the 90's imo, not just animation. None of the other disney animated movies break into those ranks for me
I really liked Tarzan personally. It had a little different style to it and they did some really cool stuff with it animation-wise (check out Deep Canvas).

there have been some old (and newer) disney pencil tests posted here, if anyone's interested:

shheeeeeiiiiiiiittttttt, you're lucky Robin Hood was 16 years before Little Mermaid or i would have dropped gloves . That being said, The Great Mouse Detective and The Rescuers are both great. Hell, they only had 6 animated features in ~15 years before LM

#1. Lion King #2. Aladdin
Those 2 rankings with animated movies are pretty much locked in for me. Even with the CGI, those 2 are pretty much locks for the top 2 spots.
But after those two Beauty and the Beast would be pretty high on the list of animated 90s ones, probably competing for the #3 spot with The Little Mermaid. 6/21/2010 7:59:16 AM |

I don't understand the Beauty and the Beast nutswingers. I mean yeah Beauty likes the Beast because he has a gentle side (as opposed to him being just another "hot prince charming") but other than that difference it's just kind of lame. 6/21/2010 10:07:20 AM |

1. The Lion King 2. Aladdin
- More emotional story (I don't get misty-eyed at any point in Aladdin, but show me the scene where Mufasa is laying there dead and Simba is trying to wake him up...) - Aladdin has some great songs, but Lion King has a better soundtrack overall. - I hate to use it as a positive, but Lion King has better voices/star power. Robin Williams and Gilber Godfried are great, but they can't touch the all-star cast of Lion King. James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Rowan Atkinson, Cheech Marin, JTT, Nathan Lane. Hell, I just found out that Rafiki was voiced by Benson! (Robert Guillaume) And you can't tell me that Jeremy Irons isn't a perfect villain. 6/21/2010 4:46:55 PM |

Looks like a fairly weak decade. I don't understand the infatuation most people have with Little Mermaid and BatB. Not a big Robin Williams fan.

Other than The Little Mermaid, all of these feel really dated to me...something about the "all-star" casts and the crossover radio hits makes them seem more like relics of a specific time than Disney's earlier stuff. 6/21/2010 10:40:46 PM |

yeah Lion King was the first movie that I know of to feature so many big name actors as voices, and it worked out great IMO
I don't like the trend though. Regular actors can suck big time at voice acting. Prime example - Owen Wilson as the main character in Cars. WTF? The 40 second cameo by Click & Clack had more personality than Owen Wilson did in the entire move. ]6/21/2010 11:10:34 PM |
