now realize that there's dozens of other threads of tons of other silly people saying the same thing you're saying.
can you and your cohorts keep it in one place, thnx. 6/21/2010 8:24:10 AM |

I wouldn't call that a "pussy" move. He was taking a big risk there, because if he was caught diving he would have gotten himself in trouble with the referee.
Plus, not that it made a big difference, but Brazil was pulling the same shit the entire game, and the ref didn't crack down on it.
Is it classless? Yes. Pussy? No. There are a few teams that pull this shit all the time. See: Italy.
But, as I've said before, you can't have good, classy teams without the evil, shithead ones to play against. The good can't exist without the bad. 6/21/2010 8:28:44 AM |

They aren't. They're actually so incredibly fucking tough, that they can afford to act like a pussy. On average, soccer players are twice the athlete than any sissy quarterback, point guard, or pitcher.6/21/2010 8:31:45 AM |

It's a difficult situation to deal with because there are really only a few fixes:
1. Institute retroactive penalties for diving. This would involve FIFA reviewing the footage afterwards and issuing the player a suspension for the next game for simulation.
2. Add instant replay. This would stretch out the game, because the officials would review each call. Maybe it could be like gridiron football where coaches could sacrifice a substitution for a "call review," and if the call was reversed they kept their substitution.
However, what about situations where technically a foul was committed but the player exaggerated the effects? This is the hard part. A good example would be that animated gif. Kaka did walk right into the path of that player and put an elbow up and shove him off. Is that a foul? Yes. Did he hit him in the face? No. So, the review would show that Kaka did foul the player. What does the ref do then? 6/21/2010 8:39:57 AM |

If it's a foul then he should get the foul.
I don't see why it would be a bad thing to have instant replay. It's not like other sports games drag out for 5 hours because of instant replay.6/21/2010 8:41:56 AM |

i think these are both horrible ideas
i mean, i know it's an entirely different situation, but it was quite convenient in rec soccer that whatever i ruled was what happened, no questions asked.

How was that a red card?
Isn't a red card for something like really bad? That seems to be deserving of a yellow card at most, but more likely just a warning and free kick. 6/21/2010 11:37:11 AM |

I'm trying to figure out how to take a huge NBA fan -- a fan of the league where it is a proven fact that officiating was influenced by gamblers and bookies -- seriously when he complains about officiating in another sport.
I haven't really found a way to pay him much attention, though.

And this doesn't happen in every sport??
Football: Raiders/Patriots as mentioned up above, the fucking infamous 5th down call in Colorado game Baseball: Took away an easy complete game this year Basketball: Kings/Lakers in what seems like 20 years ago, Suns/Spurs about 5 years ago, etc.
I will say that the call in the US/Slovenia was probably one of the worst I've seen in ANY sport. But it does happen all the tim.6/21/2010 11:40:35 AM |

Do refs assign penalties in soccer based on how injured a player is? That's the only reason I see for soccer players to fake injuries after they dive.
Players flop in basketball, but I never see them writhing around on the ground pretending they broke something. 6/21/2010 11:46:13 AM |
God All American 28747 Posts user info edit post |
^Yes.
And they do that in basketball, the difference is that soccer is much more of a contact sport than basketball.
In basketball, touching someone's hand is a foul. Egregious injury is almost automatically a technical or an ejection.
In soccer, there's plenty of rough physical contact that can be clean without a foul. 6/21/2010 11:48:09 AM |
AndyMac All American 31922 Posts user info edit post |
Contact isn't called foul in basketball due to threat of injury, it's called a foul when one player gains advantage because of the contact. People get injured in basketball all the time without anyone being ejected.
If player A smashes player B trying to dunk in the body from behind and sends him crashing into the goalpost in a crumpled heap, but he gets up immediately and doesn't pretend to be injured, player A will get a flagrant foul and possibly ejected.
If player A attempts to block player B but fouls him instead, and player B falls and tears his ACL, it's just a foul.

Yes, but the amount of injury (if legitimate) to a player indicates how clean the tackle was.
Example: Brazilian player slide tackles an Italian player.
Two ways this could play out:
It looks like a rough tackle, but the Italian player rolls off the tackle and gets right back up. Ref calls a simple foul.
It looks like a rough tackle, and it's confirmed by the Italian player writhing around in pain. Clearly the Brazilian player slid in hard and hit the Italian player in the back of the ankle. Red card. 6/21/2010 12:01:05 PM |
