Apple has always done a great job of keeping a tight grasp on the hardware, and controlling the environment thier software runs in.

Microsoft has a unique situation in its open minded view on hardware. The market is littered with mom and pop companies creating motherboards, add-ins, etc. You get consumers buying them because they are cheap, then blaming microsoft when windows blows up. The general public doesn't understand that a poorly written driver/firmware can crash the entire system like the people in this forum do.

Blocking direct hardware access from code, signed drivers, etc.. is just the path Microsoft has taken, instead of Apple's "it's our hardware, bitch" approach. In my opinion, its the longer, harder path to follow, but I think it will win out in the end. Microsoft will eventually get to the point where the framework for the OS is so bulletproof, they can deal with the nastiness spewed by the Xing-Wa Sparkle Technologies network card throws at it.

They also have years and years of "windows crashes all the time" mentality to break out of.

I think Apple has also started loosening its death grip on the hardware in the past few years, and is going to start running into a lot of the issues Microsoft has already had experience in handling.

Also, I don't completely agree with the "it just works" perception. It's really only applicable to the things that apple has end to end control over usually just works, namely basic everyday type applications like browsing, email, and consuming content. Since the vast majority of end/home users don't venture too far away from the aforementioned use cases, the perception of "it just works" was created.

Apple was years ahead of MS in making their machines and applications geared towards ease of consuming, managing and manipulating digital media. I think Windows has caught up for the most part, but the perception issue will take years of good execution to overcome.

Hell the best thing MS can do is start writing and publishing OSX malware.

^ that's not a case of being broken so much as it is a case of not being physically capable of doing so. It's also my biggest beef with apple by far.

^^ The point is that there are a very select few hardware variations that apple has to code for, which is a huge advantage. Windows has to support thousands of different pieces of hardware with their own drivers, many of which are poorly written and cause system instability, and ultimately the users blame the OS.
