Lake Wheeler is starting to look better

for a few days, those drop offs before and after the bridge would jar the shit out of my car. it takes some serious impact to get a CD to skip these days....

When they first started though they put down cones everywhere, but made the lanes super narrow, so you had to have one tire on the concrete curb... and now we have to play dodge the manholes that stick up about 3"... but a small price to pay for peaceful driving

this, too, has annoyed me to no end...i'm not sure what they think they're doing, but it's certainly not repaving

If it's the same company doing both jobs they're probably going to pave all at once.

The lanes that they have milled on Avent Ferry road are actually smoother driving than the existing lane.

I fear that this will turn out like Glenwood & 5 Points. It took them a day or two to "eat up" the old road, leaving a shitty rough road behind. Then nothing happened for 2 months. All of a sudden, they came in and paved everything in one week's time. Why didn't they just eat up and pave the road when they were ready as opposed to waiting 2+ months between demo and re-paving the roads?

It all depends on the contractor's schedule and/or when he can get asphalt. I think that with Wooten paving the new lanes on I-40, most of the asphalt plants around here swamped at night time.

I'm glad they're repaving Avent Ferry, but why the hell are there random raised rectangular sections jutting out on the left side of the left lane (when headed towards campus)? That shit will do a number to my car with its 40 sidewall profile tires (I've looked, they're not raised for manhole covers).

I think I just need to avoid this road (and Lake Wheeler) till its all done.

The milling machine can't get close to utility covers so they have to stop, go over them, and then start again. Then a labor crew has go in and remove the asphalt around all the utility covers. Until that happens, they're rectangular raised areas.

It wasn't in broad daylight so my eyes could be wrong, but I looked closely at those raised rectangular sections as I drove/swerve around them. I didn't see any utility covers.

I feel like I'm on the go kart track when I drive down AF now. Switching lanes, back and forth, as I plow past all the cars that are going 30 MPH; swerving to avoid large bumps in the road, dodging cyclists...it's a lot of fun if you think about it.

Your idea of looking better and mine don't match. I drove down it this morning and it was still stripped down bare and it was down to one lane (the fucking highway turning lane -- I mean come on).

Did anyone actually call the number posted on that sign between Chappell and Varsity?

The one that says "CALL DOT AND DEMAND REPAVING"

maybe it finally got through to them

When they finally complete the paving, it'll be great--until they have to tear it up again when a water main bursts in the winter.

I drove by those rectangular things in the road slowly to see what they were, its a small round metal cap, maybe for utility access?

just as stated before, all the non-milled asphalt is due to utilities (manholes & other accesses - for valves, air releases, etc). though for some reason, they left huge rectangles around the smaller accesses.... someone got lazy I've seen companies leave large areas around manholes... but these guys did the opposite... maybe they're doing that so they can find all the smaller accesses...

and that shit is fun as hell to drive on at about 55-65 mph in my truck.

the spot where you go straight past athens towards lake johnson is a bit tricky

if you stay in the carved area, you end up in the opposite side's left turn lane

The worst part seems to be that they broke the sensor for cars at the Lake Dam, Pineview Dr. I can sit there for a full 5 minutes now. I've given up and just run the red light now.

Thanks for the picture of the machine that grinds, works, treats, or shapes asphalt.

I'm going to one up you with Wikipedia:
Quote :
"Asphalt milling is the process of grinding up asphalt that can then be recycled."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asphalt_milling_machine

So I guess you could say the asphalt is ground up after the milling machine does it's job, eh?

Yea, you could. I guess ground up is the closest to milled.

I'm just used to seeing it on written on construction documents I guess. "Mill existing asphalt X inches..."
It's also what asphalt and grading contractors say so I like to keep it consistent.

This has/had to be the worst road in raleigh. and I think they only have enough money to screw it up even more and leave it like that. They haven't touched it in a week!
