so if e-bullying (and the subsequent whining of those who like to cry to mods or make "I'm taking my toys and going home!" threads) is such a big deal, eliminate the largest source of it

i get that the qntm-powers-that-be want to make this site more than it has been as of late, and i don't think tww has ever had better leadership, and certainly not leadership that has cared more in many many years

what i don't get is why the lounge and chit chat both exist if the crap that keeps getting this site (and its users) into trouble comes largely from chit chat...if we DON'T want that, toss the craphole forum and start handing out suspensions for those users that persist in chit-chat-style behavior in the other forums

why get rid of chit chat rather than just being harder with suspensions? because having two distinct forums in which to discuss the same (general) topics but with differing levels of decorum is stupid if people are going to cry about it

IF the idea is to make tww better, then stop hiding behind the "come on guys, we're in our twenties!" mentality of expecting users to police themselves (because they won't, obviously) and start, i don't know, MODERATING the site (prevent the fires in the first place, rather than scrambling to put them out when they start)

i've seen it written several times that the powers do not want to feel like they have to restrict speech, but i don't know that you can have it both ways...REQUIRE your users to act as you want them to act, or step away and let them do as they want...tww is a free service and if you don't like the way some of the users are acting, advise them to act right and remove them from the equation

personally, i think tww could stand a little restructuring AND some stricter policies regarding user behavior...i know for a fact that this screen name is an example of one that "bullies" the crybabies in chit chat, but i'm not as bad as some (though still much worse than the average user)...but then, i've yet to figure out how the lounge and chit chat are different in their intent except for the nudity and "bullying"

Chit Chat was created as a containment area for general internet bullshittery, keeping it out of the Lounge

It does a fairly decent job of that. Eliminating Chit Chat wouldn't eliminate negative behavior, at least not within any reasonable time period.

Chit Chat is the Party in the Back to the Lounge's Business in the Front. I see no reason to fuck with that chemistry.

I guess this is all in response to the God problem. What mods are up in arms about this? Who deserves any type of suspension for their behavior? What rules were broken?

On the other hand, RD's life would lose all purpose and he would probably kill himself. So I guess I'm 50/50

none, really...the mods generally do their jobs (as i see them) very well...but i think ken has a more vested interest in making this site better than it currently is and i get the impression that he'd like the trolling and general douchebaggery scaled back

that can't happen in tww's current state, not without an active effort on the part of users...which isn't going to happen because there's no reason to do so

the point of this thread is to evaluate whether a restructure would be beneficial to accomplishing ken's goal of making this site more civil and welcoming...more clearly defined rules governing behavior should be developed and/or a restructure should take place if changes are going to take place

i, for one, feel i can do whatever i want in chit chat (unless a particular user complains that i'm hurting his feelings, because for some reason his tears can move mountains) as long as i don't break the rules...but that same style of behavior that i generally confine to chit chat (and which is rarely on the same level of God's douchebaggery) is exactly what keeps coming up as a reason that this site isn't welcoming to new users

Chit Chat was so much worse when I first got on tww. Maybe I'm just desensitized, but I don't see what the big problem is. Maybe a new descriptor of chit chat is in order, but I think chit chat is important, solely on the traffic it generates as well.

(It's just the internet people, words are just that, words!)

you hear all the time in the news about people losing jobs b/c of some comment they made online. you've seen stories of little kids committing suicide b/c other kids bully them online. it's not just something that happens to other people, it's happened right here on tww too

in the past it's been the norm to just accept that the internet can be a rough place, and it is easier to be a jerk online without having to look somebody in the eye. but the trend is the internet being a stronger reflection of who we ACTUALLY are. it's much more ingrained into our daily lives, and every thing you do is saved and stays on the web for everybody to see and scrutinize, even years later

if you ARE a jerk irl, and that's how you want to act online, i'm not going to stop you (within reason). but don't come crying to me when nobody likes you, or your boss finds out the racist garbage you like to spew online, or your mom finds out you're a pervert or something.

People are going to act however they want to act, regardless of how you structure the community. At best, we can influence where certain behaviors will occur, which is why chit chat exists.

This particular community is what it is, and the only two ways to change that identity is if people do it on their own (i.e. grow up), or a significant influx of new users who would already carry themselves better change the makeup of this community. If we try to force this from the top down, the site will die.

exactly...though i suppose your push wasn't even so much to protect people from their own choices (or, rather to encourage them to think first), but to improve the image of tww as a whole

i certainly have no trouble with chit chat...people can be racist, or post porn, or "troll" (e-bully, whatever) as much as they want and it makes little difference to me

however, while i get your point about the net becoming a larger part of our lives, it makes me sad that some people take the internet so seriously that they equate your e-personality with your irl-personality...i'll call each and every person a liar who dares to say the act EXACTLY the same online as they do irl because it's human nature to act differently...whether that difference is intentional, or an exaggeration of their irl personality, or a demonstration of characteristics that they never show irl, that depends on the person and their mood

again, this thread isn't really about getting rid of chit chat...it's just noting that if you leave it up to the users to govern themselves, it simply won't happen...chit chat will remain a repository for crap as long as the site allows it (and encourages it by marking the difference between the lounge and chit chat)
