I'll be there for ~3 days. Haven't been since I was a kid. Is there anything that I absolutely must do while I'm there? I remember not being impressed with the Wright Brothers Memorial. 8/4/2010 4:10:05 PM |

hang-gliding or walking around the dunes at Jockey's Ridge is about the only thing that is different from the other outer banks places. 8/4/2010 4:16:08 PM |

spend money, don't drive drunk, don't set off fireworks, don't go to any place that has a buffet, and please for the love of god use your turn signals, drive the speed limits, and use the damn turn lanes!
And all the stuff at the Wright Bros. has been improved and added onto since you were there.
Spend a day and go down to Hatteras, see the lighthouse in Buxton, ride the ferry to Ocracoke, catch the ~7:45PM ferry back over to Hatteras, then drive back up to NH. It's roughly 90 minutes from the ferry docks up to NH with normal (a few slow cars) traffic on 12. 8/4/2010 4:50:59 PM |

If you're that type and have 4wd you can head further north or south on the OBX and go offroad as well. Not really a must-do, but something different if you go with friends. 8/4/2010 7:47:04 PM |

^ outer banks brewing station. i like them because any food they can get locally is local and is clearly marked on the menu. i've tried most of their beers and like a couple, but the pan seared red snapper i had last week was fantastic. 8/4/2010 8:36:37 PM |

+1 for Outer Banks Brewing Station. The food and the Beverages are good.
Go to Mama Kwan's and have the tuna nachos. The place isn't fancy, but the food is outstanding. (Though it continues to perplex me that a place with a full bar only has bottled beer. But the food is good enough to forgive them.) 4/28/2014 12:39:49 AM |

Another thumbs up for Mama Kwan's. Fish tacos are fucking money.
I like to hit the Jolly Roger for breakfast and bloody marys.
And you need to hit Biscuits N Porn as well. 4/28/2014 11:56:12 AM |

Headed to Mama Kwan's tonight. Down here celebrating my 3 year anniversary with the wifey. Came down with bathing suits, shorts and t-shirts, ended up having to buy hoodies just to fish. Fierce winds coming of the ocean for the past 2 days. Gonna do the Diners, Drive ins and Dives sweep tomorrow with lunch at the Outer Banks Brewing Station and dinner at the Black Pelican. 4/28/2014 5:26:20 PM |

Tortuga's Lie Love the Kite Shop across from Jockey's Ridge
The Jolly Roger isn't what is was when I was younger. My Papa used to take me there for my birthday every year just to watch me wolf down the crab legs. The other places we frequented aren't open any more as far as I know, but I will mention them.

I'd recommend Brine and the Bottle. A few years ago on an anniversary trip, we randomly stopped in for a drink and dessert (blueberry cobbler takes 30 min to prepare but it was really good) after Lost Colony and loved it so much we went back for dinner the next day. Portions are smaller than some places but it's really quality and fresh. Menu varies based on whatever is freshest. Nice small little place with an outdoor patio.
And then a year later or so, we saw it on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Hopefully it's still the same place after getting that type of pub. 4/29/2014 8:40:48 AM |

fisherman's wharf is still in wanchese and one of my favorite places to go. it's fun to watch the boats coming in and out of the slips from their view over the water. 5/3/2014 8:42:58 PM |

That is good to know! At one point I went down there and it was closed but maybe it was just following a hurricane or they were renovating. 5/4/2014 10:54:05 AM |

they're seasonal - I think they run from Easter to Thanksgiving or something like that. A lot of the restaurants close for the winter. 5/4/2014 12:56:59 PM |

Kill Devil Grill is pretty tasty too. Good call there.
If you're looking for somewhere nice as a dinner option, 1587 at the Tranquil House Inn in Manteo is excellent. Great food, great service, overlooking Manteo harbor. Not cheap but worth it. 5/4/2014 2:57:44 PM |

drive your girlfriend through rodanthe so she can be disappointed at the fact it looks like a demilitarized zone.
obviously the only works if she read the book / watched the movie.
hahaha, good times. 5/12/2014 8:44:07 AM |
