i'll never buy another final fantasy game after the complete failure that was Final Fantasy XIII. Besides, totally burnt out on MMO's after investing so much time into WoW.

XIV is an MMORPG like FFXI ... completely different than XIII Might limit your ability to "test drive" the game

I've got a lot of friends in the beta, and while yes, it's just a beta, I'm pretty worried that it won't be very good. Seems like there are a lot of basic issues still to be fixed that shouldn't exist in the first place if they had learned their lessons from WoW about what makes for good MMO design.

FF XIV and its recent predecessors are not even a shadow of what the NES/SNES FF games were. Why did they have to kill such a great thing? Why not soop those themes back up for X360, PS3, PC, etc games? Why all the emo all of a sudden?

Sounds like i'm out. I don't have the time to invest in a MMPROG. Not worth playing my couple hours a week when i'll just be a n00b for the 16 and 49 yr old geeks playing every waking hour (outside of school/work)

^^ its not that they "killed such a great thing", its the style evolved and was made better.

i won't go into it too much more cause i think that it would lead to a rant about how gaming is multiplayer and not just for nerdy boys but branched out to everyone now.

FFVI had plenty of emo shit. Terra whined about understanding what love is. Edgar and Sabin had that painfully melodramatic flashback to when their father died. Cyan ran after his dead family as they got on the Phantom Train. It was just easier to ignore because we were younger and the cinemas were much shorter.

Style over substance. It looks "better", but sure as heck doesn't play better.

And this is simply a terrible legacy that has passed on. All those whiners complaining that casual gaming is killing the industry are wrong. It started dying back when the PSX generation formed the term "hardcore" (lawl) and thought anything not "hardcore" was boring and killing the industry. Enormous resources required for projects to sustain these hyped up bohemoth games coupled with consoles with $600 price tags is the legacy passed on. No wonder casual games look so good to companies.

But yes. I'm sure all of this amounts to "better" as you suggest.

Yeah, I got an email about this this morning. But the webpage is saying this:

I was able to get accepted around 11:30pm on the 6th (yesterday). I had tried a few hours earlier and it was closed for new applications. Just keep trying randomly if you haven't gotten in yet and you will eventually.

not really.

your class is basically dependent on the gear you equip. you want to change to gladiator and level that, then just equip a sword and shield. you want to level lancer, then equip a polearm.

basically you can switch classes on the fly that way. same goes for gathering/crafting. they are basically classes to level.

you basically have a physical character level and then a class rank.

The graphics are good. The UI is bad. The controls are horrid with a mouse + keyboard and only marginally better with a gamepad.

^^^ FYI, i had terrible luck using the FFXIV downloader to download the client. i'd rarely get connections and when i did they were extremely slow. if you're having the same issues, go into the FFXIV install directory and manually open the .torrent files in a bittorrent client.

Yeah... I left the downloader going and left my place last night.

When I got back, it had failed early into the download and hadn't reconnected.

GKMatt already recommended I go the torrent route. I'm gonna try that tonight

I have every Final Fantasy and it sucks that the series is gasping for breath... the last game I had any interest in was American IX but only for the old school throwbacks. Tactics and X (US) were good but VIII (US) was a failure in my eyes. I'll always be a fan of III (US) and VII (US/JA).

I wish they'd redo VII in modern graphics or do another Tactics that's not on a damn hand held

VIII really wasn't that bad. The Junction system sucked but I thought the story was pretty good. Way better than the last few recent games.
