How does hunting change from year to year, other than the fact that you have to drive further out to see less cookie cutter neighborhoods and strip malls?

well, this year it's legal to bow hunt on sundays and it's legal to hunt with a crossbow anytime it's legal to bow hunt

it's also legal to trap armadillos in NC this year

many other changes took place

hell, last year was the first year that it's been legal to hunt deer with a rifle in virginia. they could only use bows and shotguns (and muzzleloaders too, iirc)

i didn't really get in to dove hunting this year. i have hunted doves hard on opening day for 15 yrs, but i just didn't feel it this year. i went for a little while on labor day, but didn't really do all that great.

i am, however, looking forward to bow hunting on saturday. i just got a used mathews bow off of craigslist, and am pretty excited about that.

^ Haha. Mom is not happy me. I talked Dad into getting a bow too. So, we started getting sets ready a month early. Dad and I already have some good pictures but I wanna try my new Parker on a doe before I try the big boys. If the bow doesn't work out there's always muzzle loader in a couple of weeks.

My bow's at Carolina Outdoor right now getting tuned up.

I found a little spot over in New Hill to hunt this season. Folks have never hunted their property and want ot lower the deer population some. Should be fun.

I had a Bear bow that I liked, but sold b/c it sat in my closet for the longest time. Now I wished I had it back

Got a .223, .308 and 30/30 for hunting this year. Now I got to find a good tree stand.

Took the crossbow out this morning for the opening day hunt. Got some property leased in Franklin county. Made my way to the stand around 6am and scared the holy shit out of a very large beaver that promptly jumped into the pond.
Heard a lot of commotion in the woods behind me...scraping, twigs snapping. I was totally convinced it was a deer but I never saw anything.
I did see 6 deer on I-40 on my way there and almost killed one with my car on 64.

Going again in the morning....

I dove hunted all last weekend, got my limit most every day. I'm still looking for places to dove hunt around fayetnam though.

I, too, am excited about crossbows. I'm probably not gonna go out and get one just for bow hunting, actually I'm positive i'm not going to, but its nice to know I could.

I don't think that is accurate statewide. Maybe in the eastern part of the state but I've hunted the mountains of VA (Pulaski county and Carroll county) with a rifle since I was 8 years old...killed my first deer in Pulaski county when I was 9 with a .270. Hell, you can use a rifle on turkey in VA, killed my first turkey with a .308 when I was 12 in VA.

Sold one of mine today. Ended up with two and a stack of Easton arrows for <$20 at a yard sale. Still have the nicer one of the two and the arrows, but I might sell it too at some point.

shot this buck at 15 yards yesterday afternoon in jones county. trailed him for about 80 yards in the woods. this is the biggest buck i've killed with the bow. he is about 15" wide, and i'll probably end up mounting this one.

i wanted to get another deer with the bow, but it rained so much in the area, i didn't get to go again. oh well, time to break out the black powder. i will be out in the morning! maybe the 20"+ of rain that we got over the past week kept all the deer from eating, and they will all burst out in the fields hungry!

Took a doe last night at 5:50pm in Nash county with my new crossbow. This is my first deer ever so I was pretty pumped to get it within bow range. Her and another doe snuck in behind me and she stopped in my corn pile at 25 yds. The Rage two-blade had her dead in 15 seconds and she crashed about 50 yds behind me

Anyone know a place in the area that makes deer slim jims or does other types of processing? The boy wants some and I don't know where to get them, much less which place makes good ones.

Try finding a game meat processor around you. The smaller family owned ones are usually pretty friendly and have jerkys and snaps and other meat snacks for sale that they make from parts of the animal left over after all of the filets, tenderloins and etc are retrieved

I'm in Cary, so I was hoping someone could suggest a place in the area. obviously not in Cary, but there has to be a place in Fuquay or Bahama or something.

^are you in a subdivision with some woods around Cary? i've heard of guys hunting subdivisions and surrounding woods with a bow and arrow and seeing massive deer. you may have to go ninja on it so no one sees you

anyways, i've not had much success since the 8 pointer. i'm still hunting with the bow, but haven't seen a whole lot since. i've got to try another set next week when i get to go again.
