Me and some buddies at work just recently stated using it. I searched the forum and there was only one other thread for dropbox, and it was so old I could not post to it.

What do you guys do with your dropbox? Right now we have a shared folder where we just drop music/movies in... I have the app for android.... any other near things I am missing?

I use it. Started last year for a project. Works great for me as Im daily on 3 computer systems plus I can pull my files off the web. Great for homework where I do it at home, edit it later on my laptop, and print it in a lab somewhere on campus.

I use it to sync shit from home & work. Have a shared folder to my dad so that we can share photos back and forth. And then I have a folder with the NC Educational Technicians group that one guy has scripted to sync 40 different antivirus/antispyware programs. That's great in my job, because I don't have to hunt for the newest versions of X software.

I use it with OneNote.

I also use it as a backup for text and figures for my journal articles.

I also keep all my Matlab functions in there

I use Mesh.com

And now windows live essentials. Both do the same thing from Microsoft.

Except mesh still gives you 5gb I believe

I am a long-time user of Dropbox, but am leaning in favor of the new Live Mesh since it will synchronize my computers directly instead of pushing to the cloud first. But I just need Mesh to do delta updates instead of full files. That's a little annoying. The nice thing is that non-cloud syncs are not limited to only 5gb.

Wouldn't mind trying it out. Reason I use dropbox is the mobile app and the ability to have a "public" folder with public URL's for files. Can essentially host a website in your folder if you'd like. Also the ability to share folders with other dropbox users with multiple file versions and back up versions. How is mesh in these regards?

Dropbox will sync over a network if it's checked in the settings. It still uploads to the cloud but goes over the network first.

I'm with Noen on Mesh. For computer-only networks I think it's a better system, particularly since they roll in remote access into the same program. For just plain-jane file sharing (or if you have several androids in the house) you could make a good case for Dropbox.

I also like the Mesh can do a p2p sync of unlimited size; I couldn't get that on Dropbox. DB was taking FOREVER to sync larger files while the p2p got it done many, many times faster.

mesh(Live Sync now) is what I've been using forever. I use it to sync my eclipse workspaces across computers.

the only things that are really annoying about mesh are that it uses a screenscrape driver for remote control instead of RDP and it requires you specify a password if you're going to use the remote control.

I'll have to give mesh a try. You mean across a network? Over the internet it would be an upload/isp issue. Dropbox typically maxes out my 5mb upload connection at home.

Mesh does folder sharing right? One of my favorite parts of dropbox is the notifications at the bottom of the screen when someone updates a certain file in a shared folder.

Does mesh have any type of public folder where you can grab a URL that directs to a file? So you don't have to force someone to get mesh to share files?

I'll give it a shot. I don't use windows explorer as my file browser so if it integrates without needing to run explorer I'll give it a try.

^yes - Dropbox wanted to sync everything to google servers, then to our other machines. The problem, however, is that we have like 8 machines trying to stay synced - meaning that 2GB file I am trying to move is clogging up our pipe for a good long while instead of just using the multitude of local bandwidth we have.

And yes - you can access mesh accounts from almost any web browser - even from my zune or blackberry. However I keep all my stuff under a password - not sure if you can make it public. In that case I would just drop it on our FTP - I haven't tried sharing.

the new update allows selective syncing across folders across each of your computers and syncing over a network. Both work really well.

I use it as a temporary store for large video I'm sharing with people. Also use it to sync programming tools and bash profile across several computers. Oh and use it to store all my roms for emulators on Android.

So in fairness I'm giving dropbox a second shake just for LAN sync. We've been going with Livemesh for a while now just because it's LAN sync was blazing fast for us. But dropbox had a slew more clients (for tablets and phones) so it would be nice to see what happens.

After investigating for a few days I've determined that LAN sync in dropbox is almost useless. Almost. It takes the files, uploads them to google servers, then on the next update searches for a LAN sync client. This is, in fact, the dumbest process I can possibly imagine. Not only does it lock you into your 2GB file size limit, but it still provides terrible, terrible performance. Even at 20Mbit upload it's taking a crushingly long time to move my 2.8GB file instead of the direct gigabit speed we were getting with live mesh LAN sync.

With the live mesh schematic we get unlimited size on peer to peer synced gear, direct network connection speed (without waiting for it to upload first,) selective sync to server, and a system that's just as easy to use. Sorry google.

^I'm confused. Evernote and Dropbox are two entirely different things. Aren't they? I use Evernote for taking notes and Dropbox for syncing files.

-I realize Evernote will sync files between computers and to the cloud that are attached to a note but Dropbox is for syncing files on your computer. I use Dropbox on my work, home, and laptop computers to sync all my documents so I can move between them without having to do any type of file transfer.

AFAIK Evernote doesn't do anything similar to this.
