Can't touch this setup with an 3dtv you'll find n a store,,,
If anyone is looking into investing in 3d.........buy a projector....you'll spend around $800 for a good 120hz 3d ready projector. Then go buy a Nvidia 3d vision kit, comes with ir emitter and active shutter glasses.
Then, u can use a pc with a decent geforce gpu ....did that for a while myself..
But then i went out and picked up the new Mac mini with geforce 320m and hdmi, and built-in power supply... Now i have an amazing portable 3d projector setup that I can take with me if i want....the projector included a backpack because it is made for carrying aroun, it's a gt720 optoma projector, short throw, and it can put up a 120" screen when place only 6ft from the wall. Also, the lamps are only $199 (most proj lamps are 5-600). Cools in only 10 seconds.....it's easily the best 3d setup one can buy!
Just thought i would share this information for anyone thinking of investing the thousands needed for a home 3dtv setup. Fr 3d, the best experience, is a large, immersive screen.....when u watch 3d on a tv...the hard edges of (non 3dness) ruin the experience.
Let the flaming begin....i am just offering my experience and if anyone is in north raleigh and i can trust you enough to come by my house,,,,i have no problem letting anyone come check out this setup for themselves.
Flame on tech fags
I'm expecting a vast amount of negative posts all authored by members who have not only never experienced this type of setup...but would talk negative of anything they are even slightly jealous about. Don't be a fucking prick..thanks
I'd be glad to share some pics if anyone wants any,,,thanks 10/21/2010 11:25:48 AM |

i love how glassssssss poisons the well by calling everyone that says anything negative about his setup a fag or prick, and assume no one else here has seen a nvidia 3d vision setup before.
that aside, i think i'm going to do something very similar in my basement. although not with a Mac mini, but with a PC based miniITX setup like what i use on my current HDTV

just a basic miniITX HTPC (small, portable, build-in PSU, HDMI) setup w/ HDTV. i got to see the nvidia 3d vision at a recent conference and it's pretty cool. i still not a huge fan of wearing glasses and i'm still uncertain about adopting 3d yet, but if i do i'll probably go the projector route for my basement.
glassssssss, i'd love to see pics. also how loud is the gt720 optoma?
another important question here, how do you watch Blu-ray on a Mac mini??????
one thing to consider is that a projector is hard to setup unless you have a blank wall to use. this kind of setup is great for a basement or other spare room, but a) i don't really care about a mobile setup that would double as my main setup in my living room and b) i want a permanent like setup in my living room so it's more integrated, integrated setups by nature are just not going to be that mobile.... so i'll probably always have an HDTV of sorts in the living room and do a projector/mobile setup for use in the basement, etc. if a projector ever becomes the main setup then it's going to be ceiling mounted and not mobile.

another really cool thing about going the projector route is if you go with 3 of them driven by an sli array, you can can do planetarium style 3d. I saw it at pax last year and it was the first 3d ever added anything to the experience. I was playing some racing game and it really felt like I was in the car. 10/21/2010 1:59:51 PM |

Personally I think its a pretty good setup. Id do it without being mobile, as you need that blank wall, and would prefer quality over mobility.10/21/2010 4:57:23 PM |

Sorry but I cant think of anything worse than a portable projection setup. Projectors need a very controlled environment with zero ambient light.
You bought a projector with a 1600x1200 resolution. It can't do 1:1 pixel matching for 720p, and it cant do 1080p without interpolation. Sorry, but pretty much the only time a 1080p source matters is when it's HUGE.
I can say all of this pretty confidently, because I've owned several projectors, tried the whole "portable" setup, and it all ended up being pretty average.
3D or not, waste of money IMHO. Yeah it's better for gaming (120hz), but unless you have it set up in a windowless cave with a high quality screen, the contrast is going to blow and the image is going to be washed out.
It's not a bad idea, but I think you'd be better of with a LCD/Plasma set using the rest of the same setup. Any 120hz display should work with the kit, which is pretty enticing for folks who dont want to pay for the upgrade to a 3d integrated television.
But the software support is spotty. A LOT of pc games dont work, or dont work properly with the 3D vision kit. And dont expect to be using this to playback 3D blu-ray or other 3D video content in the future. 10/21/2010 9:19:01 PM |

I'll post some pics later tonight when I'm home.
Since then, my setup has changed a little. Traded my old 2009 Mac mini to a dude n craigslix for a i7 920 system. Really awesome rig,, top of the line components. Still have the new mini for taking the 3d setup to friends houses.
Btw, the setup calling out the fags, etc...was because im constantly stalked and harassed by certain forums members that frequent this area of tww....i figured I would take a precautionary measure.
All of this is done through bootcamp, so bluray playback isn't a problem. I have an external drive for retail 3d blurays, but most of the 3d content i play is from 3d bluray isos which i mount with virtualdrive and powerdvd10 is really awesome with 3d.
Trying to type all of this on an iPad hile riding in a car,,,,can't do it.
I'll posg pics and more info later. 10/25/2010 8:16:18 PM |
