Just got Time Warner Signature installed and the speed is really awesome. 50mbit down and 5mbit up. The speeds are quite consistent. Only problem is they force you to use this router/modem:

I just got a new router and going to eventually put dd-wrt on it. The Motorola wireless range sucks and half it's configuration options suck and are locked. The only solution I could find to use my router was bridge the two routers and have everything running off mine and getting an IP from the Motorola. This works but makes everything dependent on both routers working and makes port forwarding a bitch.

Apparently U-Verse and a lot of other companies are doing this too. I guess I could solve the problem by just picking up a docsis 3 modem:

Then telling TWC the mac ID and being done with it. But I don't feel like I should be paying to get a modem that hands me the wan IP I'm paying for. I guess I'm just complaining. Anyone had experience with this? My networking knowledge is limited but there HAS to be a way to send that wan IP straight through the Motorola and give it to my router instead of having the Motorola assign a lan IP to my router.

I'll mess around with the Motorola when I get home today.

What port forwarding problems are you having? I have a Wireless-N router on the inside of the stupid Uverse gateway and Xbox Live port-forwarding appears to be fine (Xbox reports my network type as Open). Warcraft has no problems either.

Yea, the Motorola Gateway should have an option to turn it's firewall off or put it in DMZ to bypass the gateway for port forwarding.

Set your personal wireless router's IP as a DMZ in the Motorola configuration. Don't know where specifically, but it should be in there somewhere, as it is in my U-Verse modem.

So I'm essentially freeing up the Motorola router for mine to take over? Using DMZ mode? Basically turning off the Motorola's firewall? It's just annoying. Why can't they give me a damn modem. You'd think there would be a way to turn the router part of it off and just use it as a modem and send the wan IP straight out again.

Not home yet but no it would still be getting a lan IP assigned by the TWC router. I don't know if there's a way to send the external IP to my router bypassing the Motorola.

I think the U-Verse modem passes the IP and firewall info back to the specified device. Not sure about the Motorola one.

I should specify, this is true for the "DMZPlus" mode that the modem offers as a selection.

Well, I know right now my devices plugged directly into the Uverse gateway are on a different subnet than my router. I had to add HOSTS file entries to get shares to work correctly and I can't sync my ZuneHD wirelessly anymore. My computer is on the router and the Zune doesn't support Wireless N.

For clarification you guys are talking about modem/router combinations right? Not just modems? I found this:

Currently my NAPT mode is enabled. Would bridge mode be sending the external IP straight through? I'll do some trial and error testing. TWC didn't seem to know much about the routers they were installing.

Called TWC. They basically went into the Motorola and turned off NAPT mode. Essentially gave the external IP to my router. Everything's working. I talked to 4 people before they sent me to tier 3 support and I talked to this nerdy Asian dude.

Don't think so and it's currently only available in the $179 phone/cable/internet package. I talked to the installer guy and he said they had a meeting and were eventually going to offer the Internet stand alone for like $99 or something.

You realize that Time Warner charges you for "renting" their modems right? So does every other ISP.

You're better off buying your own modem, you will recoup the cost within a year vs. renting one from TWC. Dunno about what they charge, but Comcast out here charges 7 bucks a month to use their modems.

I asked TWC in Raleigh about buying my own modem. They said the bill now just includes the rent fee for the modem, so regardless of whose modem you use they're gonna charge you as if you had theirs anyway. I found this out on one of my usual 3-day epics involving TWC and their internet service not working correctly for the 1,000th time.

It's just further proof just how much Time Warner sucks.

Feel free to ask anyway and report back if you hear otherwise, but that's what I was told by one of their local rep's. Mine was for standard RoadRunner so it may make a difference.

You should be able to use your own modem and get a refund for that part of the fee. They may not advertise it, but they can't charge you for equipment you dont use.

It is kind of nice to be able to just drop by the time warner place to get a modem replaced whenever.
