I changed my voter registration to FL when I lived there, and kept it when I left (no state income tax, it's a politically influential state, and I intend to return as soon as I can, anyway). Therefore, I have to vote absentee.
However, I probably won't even bother. I don't even know if I can get a ballot and do it at this point. At any rate, the last few elections have been so frustrating that I don't even know if it's worth the effort. I usually spend hours reading up on dozens of candidates, and then in the end, vote for a handful of them and either abstain or (if able), write in "no confidence" for the rest of them.
Basically, I'm pretty much politically homeless, and finding that tiny minority of candidates whom I'm willing to vote for is a case where the juice isn't really worth the squeeze.

So far its breaking towards having voted, or will vote on election day. Not surprising given the context of the soap box. I wonder what the responses would be in the Chit Chat? 10/29/2010 1:45:37 AM |

i'm voting this afternoon because i'm too busy on the 2nd
while we're talking about it, isn't there some law that says your employer has to allow you time to vote during the workday? not that i'm having trouble with it or anything (i pretty much leave and do whatever i want, as long as i get my work done), but i'm curious 10/29/2010 7:46:07 AM |

Even if you don't care about any candidates messages, you could throw a vote the Libertarian's way, and help their chances for ballot access in the future. Or write in Richard Weir (Green Party).
Building the 3rd parties is a useful exercise even if you disagree with the current main parties completely. 10/29/2010 8:16:04 AM |

Sure
Someone said that 55,000 people had already voted in Wake. If I vote that means my vote will count as 1/55,000 or about a .002% of a say in who is elected. For me, that rounds to zero. That percentage is easily smaller than the error that gets reported when the news is projecting who won (before all the votes are actually counted)
Id be better off giving money to the candidates or special interests that I support so they could run effective campaigns to convince people to vote the way I want. But I dont really have enough money for this to be effective either.
I see your point about third parties and I have done that in the past. But still felt like it was barely worth the time.
but the crux is that I am registered in a different county than where I currently reside and didn't take the time to get an absentee ballot like I have in the past. Its really my own fault.
Besides what I'll probably do is tell my boss I'm going to vote and instead go chill in the park near where I work for a few hours. Better use of my time IMO.

Yeah, you'd think that someone as politically minded as me wouldn't be one to not vote. It's not even like my views are way out there, either. I just got tired of voting for the least terrible candidate in every race, and decided that I wouldn't vote for anyone anymore unless they're at least tolerable.

I vote for Libertarian candidates sometimes, but by and large, they're way too fucking crazy for me to support.
Dems: won't keep their fucking hands out of people's bank accounts
GOP: Makes everyone's business their business; Jesus party; spend just as much as Dems (but at least inflation is a flat tax in a sense)
Libertarians: Way too fucking crazy most of the time. Most have not an ounce of pragmatism.
Greens: Only one redeeming quality, and that's that they take votes from Democrats sometimes. Otherwise, bottom of the barrel.10/29/2010 1:11:16 PM |

Interesting...This might explain a lot if everyone voted this way. If you vote 3rd party when the coin lands on edge, then the statistics start to make sense.10/29/2010 2:22:55 PM |

Voted, but only voted in 6 races (not counting my write in for myself and Ron Paul as Wake County Soil and Water District Supervisors). Also voted against the Constitutional amendment.
I REALLY wish that they would take away the straight party option, and instead add a "none of the above" in to each race. That way, when we get stuck with a bunch of terrible candidates, they're forced to redraw some new ones. There were way too many shitty candidates on nearly all of the races... 10/31/2010 12:18:43 PM |

^^ that's a false dichotomy
...and you can change mine to "No, and don't plan to."
It's not that I'm making some statement by not voting...it's just that I didn't get around to requesting an absentee ballot, due to the fact that I don't really view it as worth it while to go through that trouble, plus spending hours researching the candidates and their positions, only to find that all but a small handful of them are too intolerable to vote for.
