I know that I have always supported Goodell and his "iron fist" that he runs the league with. However IMO this is getting out of hand. I watched the Pats play the Ravens a few weeks ago and even though I am a huge Pats fan, I think that Merriweather's hit on Todd Heap was ridiculous, and a fine and ejection were in order. But last week, when Myron Pryor hit Brett Favre, it appeared 100% legal and legit. I have not seen all the other hits, so I can only speculate that there are probably some very iffy hits in addition to the Pryor one.

I think the Player's Union should try to do something about this, and I imagine they probably will.

Pretty crazy to see Harrison with $100k of fines this season. That's a lot of money, even by pro athlete standards.

Harrison is a steeler and as such he is a douche.

All of this fining nonsense will die off as the season progress or once we get into next season. The NFL had to do SOMETHING after that weekend, even if it was just for PR reasons. Players complain that they aren't taken care of once they leave the league, but as soon as the NFL steps in and does something to prevent concussions they want to bitch and moan. BITCH you make enough money that you can put some aside for medical procedures and such later on in life. I think Goodell does a great job disciplining the players and holding some sort of order in the league, and as far as I'm concerned the product on the field hasn't really suffered at all over the last few weeks.

"Fines are just public relations: In most cases fines are reduced or removed after the publicity surrounding the event dies down. Since the NFL doesn't report on reductions you don't know how much a player does pay.

One thing that might cause people to be upset is that NFL fines might be tax deductible. The TaxProf blog had a running thread discussing the issue and the verdict they reached is that you can deduct them. "

I agree with the fines; but they are getting out of hand. the fine on the guy that hit farve when he busted his chin was stupid. that didn't deserve a fine.

^^ Fines are donated to funds for retired players and their families, and as such are essentially charitable contributions. Deduction sounds legit to me.
