i wanted to drop a bunch of cat5 in my house when i moved into it a few years ago. i was gonna hire some guy to do it but he wanted like $90/line. considering i envisioned like 2-4 outlets in every room, i decided against it. thought about doing it myself, but i had no idea how to get the wires horizontally through the walls, nor did i really have any good access points in the attic to drop it from

^^ I might hit you up in a couple of weeks to run some coax in my house. I've already buried the line around the foundation of the house. I just need to pop a hole in the foundation, run one line to the 1st floor living room, and then take it up into the attic to drop down to the upstairs bedrooms. Do you think you'd be up for that?

I kind of hate coax cause it isn't as flexible as CAT5e

so you want to go through the masonry and then up?
how direct is access to the attic from the living room and is the bedroom on the same side of the house?

it would be great if there was conduit already but I bet that's not the case
is it just for cable TV or are you hooking any of these to a cable modem?

If I want to put surround sound in two rooms of my house, but its on a slab, two story, both of the rooms to be wired are on the first floor, is there any hope of hiding the wires?

Room #1 is my living room that has a cathedral ceiling and wiring would need to converge at the TV, room #2 is my kitchen, that is going to be wired to a receiver near the fridge (I thought about doing crown molding in here to hide the wires) the kitchen has a regular ceiling.

No Coax in the house today. Just ghetto wires running around the side of the house and holes drilled in the siding. That's what I want to clean up.

I can run the wire into the crawlspace if you're not comfortable drilling through the foundation.

There's a hall closet that should provide pretty easy access to run the wire from the crawlspace to the attic. From there it would need to drop down to two upstairs bedrooms.

The living room sits on top of the crawlspace. I figured it'd be easier to just split the coax in the crawlspace and run a line to the living room. It's a split level house with no second story above the living room, so you could always just drop a line down from the attic if that's easier. The attic above the living room and the bedrooms is all connected with only about a 4' diffference in height between the two levels.

Good question.
Short answer long.
I am putting my current house up on the market to get something bigger.
I am next to certain that the new house will not have any cabling run for networking to each room.
My current house is a ranch style..which is easy enough to run cabling. My next house will almost certainly be a 2 story and that is going to require that cabling be run from one floor to the other.
And as I stream a lot of video to each of my TV's, I would rather run something that would allow for a little room to grow with the growing bandwidth requirements with streaming media.

I do not have a problem picking up the Cat 6 when it is time. I am just thinking ahead to a challenge that I strongly suspect I will have in the new house.

CAT 5e does gigabit

the only advantage of CAT 6 is heavier shielding

are you going to be running heavy electronic equipment in your home?

I will say yes.
When I think about how much I have increased the number and type of electronics since I bought this house, I would simply prefer to err on the side of caution when it comes to future installs.

I would do things differently, though

I'd run maybe two CAT5e cables OR 1 CAT5e and 1 piece of string

this second run allows you to easily put any kind of cable you want in later

CAT 6 probably isn't going to be the standard for faster than gigabit networking
fiber optics cables will probably be the deal

Yo Snewf - may have a small job for you. My neighbor wants to move his coax cable from one side of the bathroom door to the other. Easy access in the attic to run the cable up and over. What's your round a bout feelings for a charge on that one?

I've been wanting to get some cables run in my apartment, but I also figured it would be too much trouble. What I have in mind now should be relatively simple, though. I have a coax cable hookup on one side of my wall, and I just want to also put another hookup on the other side of the wall. I only have two hookups in the whole apartment, so splitting it one more time shouldn't be a problem. Let me know if your interested.
