Duke cancels student tailgating for BC game

Durham, N.C. — Duke University officials have canceled student tailgating outside Wallace Wade Stadium for Saturday's game against Boston College.

Larry Moneta, Duke vice president for student affairs, issued the directive late Monday, citing an incident at last weekend's game against the University of Virginia involving a teenager. He said the teen, a sibling of a Duke student, was found unconscious in a portable toilet near the tailgate area before the game.

Although the teen was fine after being treated in the emergency room of Duke University Hospital, Moneta said in a letter to students that it "easily could have been tragic."

"This incident has vividly revealed that tailgate as is practiced at Duke must come to an end," he wrote. "It has long lost its value as a pre-football, spirit-building activity and has become increasingly dangerous in every iteration."

Duke's season-ending rivalry game against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be played over Thanksgiving weekend, so most students are expected to be out of town.

Moneta's letter to students doesn't mention whether the students still on campus that weekend will be allowed to tailgate, but it notes that Duke administrators would meet with students and others next spring "to develop a new form of football game day celebration."

gotta love it some dumb ass high school kid gets to dunk and the whole rest of the student body gets punished. Kinda like how some drunk maine gets into an argument with two rednecks who did not even go to state, gets shot and the university cracks down on tailgating. Instead of banning tailgating why not have the ale do what they love best and bust people for underage drinking

man i went to the duke/state game a couple years ago and that shit was crazy. its just a big ass, gated parking lot where the students go and get trashed. its not really "tailgating"

when i went everyone was dressed up in costumes, but no a single costume made it in to the stadium

Yeh, tailgating to dookies is nothing but a huge halloween bash and no tailgating/football. I was talking to someone who went there vs ncsu tailgating, and they were all like, "you mean you guys don't dress up??"
