They are fantastic dogs - for some people. Please do the research necessary to make sure this is a pet for you! (c;

As a breed - they are die-hards. Stubborn, strong-willed. Killer of small, fuzzy things - and can be dog aggressive if not properly socialized as a pup. Have a mouth and bite of a bully breed - when they do snap, they mean business. Requires regular grooming - every 6-8 weeks, starting at $40 and up each time. They tend to have a lot of inherent genetic diseases, as do other purebred dogs: Scotty Cramp, Von Willebrands Disease, various types of cancers.

If you're serious about getting a Scotty - make sure you go to a reputable breeder, who does the necessary health testing on their lines. Please don't support backyard breeders or get one from a pet store. This is one of my breeds that I'm passionate about. (c;

Do it. Great dogs. Even though Peanut is stubborn and hard-headed as all hell, I wouldn't trade her for anything. Incredible personalities. And she's better around my 10 month old than I thought she'd be, though I'm careful.

Not big on other dogs until she gets to know them well. She was a rescue, so I didn't have an opportunity to socialize.

She does have Scotty Cramp, which is actually hilarious when it happens but otherwise no ill-effects. Other than getting the occasional burr stuck in her beard.

This was my kid - Scotty-Doo. Probably the best dog I've ever had.

If you can, and do decide that this is the breed for you - please do adopt - There is a Scottish Terrier Rescue that you can contact that's great.

Ed at cyclelogic has one I think. It looks like these. It's really old and chill. Putters up to you (only to the cool customers) and let's you pet him. Cool ass dog.

This describes most things Scottish.

I owned a Schnauzer growing up, not a Scottie but a terrier nonetheless and I second both a) adopt and b) anyone who warns you about them being strong-willed. I got in an argument with my mom about how she was taking care of their new Schnauzer because she said "I'm trying to be the alpha-dog". Bullshit. With a terrier you are, or you aren't. That really applies to all dogs but some are more malliable than others and terriers will test you.
