Trying to get a group of friends to go this winter Christmas break. Hotel + lift passes or some package deal from their site? What's the best way to go for cheap? Probably looking at 2 days of skiing/snowboarding.

Tons of threads around about this, but I used VRBO and discounted Costco lift passes and we ended up having a group of 8 stay in the village in a nice place for $220 a person for a Fri, Sat and Sun night (Sat/Sun ski)...

Shop around on the rental sites and you'll get a MUCH better deal then on the main website.

yea and you can find even cheaper than 220 depending on when you go. we've done it for like 150 or less a person with 6-8 people

hell yeah I love Snowshoe I was just talking to some friends about heading up there. I've never ponied up the money to actually buy a board since I only get out a few times a season so I'll probably rent one from Vertical Urge, and I think they sell discounted lift tickets as well.

i have a board, it was well worth the purchase. i few years ago i just bought a previous season's model (off ebay, but it was local so i met them to pick it up) for pretty cheap. K2. it was like $120 and has definitely paid for itself. even only going once or twice a season. it also made things SOOO much easier than dealing with renting ish. i did the same thing with boots...initially i just got some cheapo ones after shelling out for the board, but then 2 years ago or so i bought some boots on clearance (forum) that were a few seasons old.

so look for those kinds of sales (on ebay, or on websites like this...they constantly have sales http://www.trusnow.com/)

i need new bindings now. the one that came on my board were mediums so they've always been slightly too big (which is irritating). i also want a helmet but can't find one i like (but i can fit into kids ones soooo that helps with the price haha). but i really only buy gear on super sale...and you can find them too, even in the winter.

some of the places like alpine ski (does that still exist? lol) around raleigh used to also sell used boards that had been used for rentals on the cheap.

just an FYI for anyone looking to buy stuff. and just my opinion but i have never purchased any of my winter stuff (jackets, etc) full price and even now there are prob some pre-season sales going on.

^^Nice grab on the K2. I'd totally get a board and have the cash to do so but I just don't know enough people that snowboard often enough to go and the ones that I do know can't do blacks/double blacks so I don't know if it would even be worth it to go, you know?

I feel like the board is the key item and the boots don't matter that much as long as you keep your feet warm and bindings are just preference. I like flow bindings personally.

If you want cheap get your lift passes at Costco, stay at Marlinton Motor Inn ($95ish per night for a room with two queen beds), and drive 30 minutes to Snowshoe each morning.

How many people do you have and what's your budget for lodging? I know two people who rent places there, but neither is cheap IMO. One is a townhome on the mountain and the other is a cabin about 2 miles from the base of the mountain.

I used VRBO as well. We didn't book the place until the Wednesday before the trip. A lot of times they are willing to negotiate just so the place gets booked for the weekend.

I'd also be interested in this. This is what we would do to go up to Nagano every year and it was great. Hop on the bus at 11pm Friday night, be at the slopes as they open Saturday morning, stay overnight, then get on the bus Sunday after the slopes close and get home in the wee hours of Monday morning. You're pretty much useless at work that Monday but it's worth it

Do they run anything like that here?

I haven't heard of the Coke deal since about 2007. Liftopia has discounted tickets:

^ Alpine Ski Center. I've never done one of their bus trips, but I've heard good things from friends who have. The prices seem pretty good and it would be kind of nice to be able to chill rather than having to focus on a 6 hour drive in each direction.

The snowboarding is definitely not the same, but it's a fun trip once or twice a year for me. It usually only costs me $150-$200 to go for a weekend thanks to free lodging with friends. The drive and the after party would be fun even if I didn't take any runs. It's better than sitting around the house in Raleigh not doing anything.
