Remember a few years ago when Greg Shciano was practically being handed the Miami job, but decided to stick with Rutgers. Now he's 4-7 and his star has faded.

Always make the move to a better program when it comes along, because that opportunity may not be there next year.

I've got to say it would be pretty funny seeing Michigan go through 3 years of the pains of getting spread offense talent in place to spend another 3 or 4 going back to a pro-style system.

The real problem is obviously defense at this point, even if Harbaugh is a very good coach.

Question: which college football head coaching job(s), if any, would you put above Florida?

Potentially Texas, but that might be it. USC might have arguably been better before NCAA probation.

Other schools I'd say are close but just behind Florida would be Alabama, Miami, LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, maybe FSU.

Next level is probably the Georgia, Auburn, Oregon, Nebraska, Clemson, VA Tech level of schools.


Supposedly Miami is going after Pelini.

There's at least a dozen schools I'd put above Florida. Its a great job and one where you're put in a position to succeed, but its still a relative neophyte compared to some of the more storied programs in the country. You win two titles at Florida, and you're considered one of the best coaches in the game. You win two titles at Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, or Alabama, and people are naming their kids after you. I still contend that Notre Dame Football Coach is the most prestigious job in all of American sports, right ahead of the Yankees and Cowboys.

In college, I would have Bama, Notre Dame, and USC above a large group that includes Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State etc.

As clarification, I'm referring to best job TODAY. Clearly it is not as storied as a number of other programs, but I'm referring more to the best chance to walk in and be successful.

That really has more to do with TV/media exposure, resources, natural recruiting advantages, and alumni/fan base than what has been the best program over time. I'd add Penn State to my third list.

The recruiting advantages and cache of Miami make up for some deficiencies in other areas. The SEC is at a big advantage in national exposure right now, and of all the factors the ability to recruit talent is arguably the most important.

Notre Dame isn't as plum a job as it once was due to their high academic standards. If their BOD ever loosens that up a bit, ND will be back to a perennial top 5 team again. Until that happens, I would put Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas and Oklahoma as the top 5 programs out there right now due to their stability, tradition, and facilities. Miami, USC, and VT have shit for facilities like weight rooms, training facilities etc. Also, Miami's stadium and fanbase is also pretty shitty. A couple of fast rising programs out there are Oklahoma State and Oregon. Oregon, especially, could become the next dominant national power to to their uber close ties to Nike and the coach they currently have paired with USC's recent troubles.

Oregon is clearly on the rise and prime example of how big an impact huge levels of resources can have (Phil Knight). Oklahoma State is the same way (T Boone Pickens), although they have yet to win at the next level.
