I think that is very cool and I wish I could watch the news conference but I guess I'll have to wait until after I get off work.

So my roommate was telling me that someone she knows said that in December some whacky shit is going to be going down with the government. Apparently they are going to have to admit to us they have known about intelligent alien life forms for years or something.

We laughed at what was said.

It's going to be super vague assumption based upon data that will be seen as very ambiguous. I bet it'll be something along the lines of 'We detected that the hydrogen content of Titan has been decreased and have determined that there possibly some form of life that is consuming it' or something about Rhea.

Right. It's not going to be anything about alien lifeforms or possible alien lifeforms. They've already stated it's just an advancement in their search methods.

Still pre-press conference, but some info is coming out:

http://gizmodo.com/5704158/nasa-finds-new-life

Quote :
"Hours before their special news conference today, the cat is out of the bag: NASA has discovered a completely new life form that doesn't share the biological building blocks of anything currently living in planet Earth. This changes everything.

At their conference today, NASA scientist Felisa Wolfe Simon will announce that they have found a bacteria whose DNA is completely alien to what we know today. Instead of using phosphorus, the bacteria uses arsenic. All life on Earth is made of six components: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur. Every being, from the smallest amoeba to the largest whale, share the same life stream. Our DNA blocks are all the same.

But not this one. This one is completely different. Discovered in the poisonous Mono Lake, California, this bacteria is made of arsenic, something that was thought to be completely impossible. While she and other scientists theorized that this could be possible, this is the first discovery. The implications of this discovery are enormous to our understanding of life itself and the possibility of finding beings in other planets that don't have to be like planet Earth.

No details have been disclosed about the origin or nature of this new life form. We will know more today at 2pm EST but, while this life hasn't been found in another planet, this discovery does indeed change everything we know about biology. I don't know about you but I've not been so excited about a bacteria since my STD tests came back clean. And that's without counting yesterday's announcement on the discovery of a massive number of red dwarf stars, which may harbor trillion of Earths."

Weren't the aliens in Evolution arsenic-based? And allergic to shampoo or something?

Also I always thought the search for Earth-like planets because they're the only ones likely to sustain life seemed a little silly.

so how is it alien if its from earth. Now its an amazing discovery but it just means there is a lot of things that need to still be discovered here on earth.

That being said I still wouldn't be surprised if aliens are out there.

The big question on my mind is if the lady talking about the discovery has ever been laid.

Watching her talk about the discovery made me want to punt a small child.

The tenant that life itself is built upon phosphorous has now been undermined...I liked the ASU professor's statement that he's been studying phosphorous his entire career, and teaching scores of students that it's the backbone of life, and that now he's at least partially incorrect.
