My dog has reddish irritated skin on his belly. He is always running through brush and causing mayhem. He probAbly just irritated it jumping through a bush. Any suggestions as what kind of lotion to use to help it heal up faster? It is not poison ivy or anything like that.
Thanks 12/6/2010 11:00:07 AM |

veterinarian has sprays that work wonders...not expensive either but you have to pay for the visit more than likely...unless you are cool like that w/ your vet 12/6/2010 11:02:47 AM |

It's not worthy of paying for a vet trip. Thx though 12/6/2010 11:06:32 AM |

is he chewing at it or anything?
you could try one of those spray/lotion/gel hydrocortisone type things (meant for dogs of course) 12/6/2010 11:08:40 AM |

benedryl? 12/6/2010 11:25:27 AM |

benadryl will only work on an allergic reaction, which it could very well be, but won't provide relief directly to the skin. it'd work eventually though (if it's an allergy). 12/6/2010 11:27:26 AM |

my dog gets this rash on his chest- but it is because he crawls underneath the bed, and we have burber carpet (so he can't tear it up) 12/6/2010 11:41:35 AM |

^^just stick with creams specifically labeled for use on dogs. no need to risk it when there are lots of dog-specific creams & sprays easily available. 12/6/2010 12:14:01 PM |

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to give him a bath with some oatmeal shampoo meant for dogs with sensitive skin and see how that does.
A side joke... Don't they test human hand creams on dogs before releasing them anyway? 12/6/2010 12:30:57 PM |

Maybe, but why risk having your dog lick it & have to go to the emergency vet if you don't have to? Dog-specific cream is WAY cheaper than the vet trip...

My dog gets this, but it's usually exacerbated by hot weather. 12/6/2010 1:54:29 PM |

side note- Benadryl (sp?) in pill form is fine for dogs, as is most other things. I found out immodium is fine for dogs (Just don't use for extended periods of time, just like you wouldn't in humans). If you are curious, just call your vet and ask them- they told us on multiple times to use human pills, knowing it would be cheaper than going and buying dog specific stuff (realized we are on a budget)

benadryl, claritin, zyrtec, imodium, & pepto are all safe, and i've given my dogs all of that at some point. 12/7/2010 1:40:09 PM |

Our lab gets rashes on her belly too. We just use a benadryl spray, usually cleans it up in a couple days 12/7/2010 2:12:36 PM |

pretty much any pet store. its like $7 or $8. i use it in combination with benadryl (like others have said). i just buy generic benadryl (that is super cheap). i think you do like 1mg per lb. i think the capsules are usually 25mgs, so i give my (~ 50lb dog) 2. i just put it in a piece of cheese or something and she scarfs it down. she's actually more freaked out by the spray, but it does help because it has whatever bitter something or other in it also to keep them from wanting to lick it off.12/7/2010 8:52:58 PM |

walmart has a bunch of cheap products that help. My puppy had irritated skin so bad he would get scabs from scratching. We use Quick Shot and it works wonders. Its like less than $10. Hope that helps 12/8/2010 2:12:18 PM |
