I have a 93 Mazda Protege Automatic with 99k miles that started acting up today. Lately the car has been idling and a lower rpm than usual, but has been driving fine. Today, when I went to start my car, I noticed the car almost stalled (it didn't, however). When driving, I could feel the car start to vibrated when I hit the gas and it also had very sluggish acceleration. It almost felt like the transmission wasn't full in gear.
I checked the oil and found it to be a bit low. I added some but the car still had the same problem. Anyone have any idea? Transmission problem? Engine problem? It wasn't throwing any CEL's, but it is also only ODB-1. 12/19/2010 4:15:12 PM |

^ This is what I have been reading about the past few minutes. Maybe it's a clogged filter? I have no idea when the filters were last changed. I have read that both could be a problem here.
Also, is there an easy way to "clean" the MAF? Some websites say to use brake cleaner or rubbing alcohol, but I am a little concerned about that stuff getting into the engine and causing damage. 12/20/2010 1:31:53 AM |

brake cleaner and rubbing alcohol are highly volatile and will combust in your engine with gasoline. Some won't hurt/damage your car, just don't pour/spray a whole can in there. 12/20/2010 1:41:23 AM |

First things first...check the damn spark plugs, cap, and wires. I've run into a bunch of these cars that had this shit totally worn out. I'd bet your mom's butt virginity that the thing has got a severe misfire...typical shuddering kinda thing on acceleration, no power, etc.
Simplest things first, and that's about as simple, easy, and cost effective as it gets. Furthermore, if you're not familiar with what's supposed to be going on, and you have no experience troubleshooting, take it somewhere and have 'em check it. Or get somebody here, like myself or Jeepman to check it out for you. 12/20/2010 1:58:35 AM |

if checking the oil doesn't work, try "five-on-two" 12/20/2010 4:24:01 AM |
