I am new to this forum but need some help from people who have had CBRs in the past. I have a 2006 CBR 600rr and it has less than 5,000 miles on it. Just recently when I really get on it and open up full throttle the oil light comes on and the bike sputters and shuts off. Like today from a stop sign I gunned it up to about 13,000rpm then shifted to second gunned it up to 13,000rpm and when I did the red light next to the oil symbol came on and the bike sputterred and shut off while I was driving. I tried to turn it back on while coasting in neutral but it would come on for a second and shut back off. I had to come to a complete stop on the side of the road and wait a couple minutes and then started it and it worked fine and I got home fine.
Does anybody have a clue why it is doing this or what I can do? It never used to do this and I just changed the oil and the filter the other day so I don't think that is the problem. 2/3/2011 10:42:44 AM |

sounds like low oil level. make sure when you check the oil its on a rear stand or it wont read correct while leaned over. Did you use a different type of oil or filter? 2/3/2011 2:19:21 PM |

Well it started happening back in November and then I changed the oil and the filter back in November. It is still doing it though the same as it was with the old oil and old filter so I don't think that is the problem. I'm thinking its not enough fuel getting to the engine when it is opened up full throttle but I am not very good at mechanical stuff so I don't really know where to start. ^ Agreed. Like o said, you've got to have the bike positioned right when checking the oil. I'm not sure how the rear stand works on these, but if it lifts the bike off the ground it might not be the best way to check either. You want it level front to rear and side to side.
Also, find out where the oil pressure switch (sending unit) is and make sure the wires are not loose or damaged. Sometimes a loose wire will chafe and ground against the frame so you want to check them pretty thoroughly.
Did you use Honda oil?
I would not continue to ride it until you nail this down.

does it do it at redline if you accelerate more slowly up to high rpm, or only if you have the throttle pinned and are accelerating hard?
that could isolate if it's the angle of bank sensor. has the bike ever been dropped, wrecked, or significantly disassembled? 2/3/2011 6:05:45 PM |

Just throwing another idea out there - Is there any chance that the tank vent line may have become gummed up/blocked/pinched or anything? If so, the heavy acceleration (sucking more gas) may draw fuel out of the tank faster than the air can equalize pressure due to any restrictions, meaning you'll get a vaccuum forming in the tank and it would prevent/limit the fuel from leaving the tank and heading to the engine.
Not sure if it's necessarily the reason, but it's one thing to check into anyways, and shouldn't be too difficult to diagnose quickly and move on.
