But which is better for privacy reasons? I know that it's subjective because the answer could be either, depending on how you calibrate the settings, but I feel that twitter is just more secure...this is coming from someone who recently got off facebook for privacy reasons...was all of this in vain? Are they equally unprivate??? Which is better? Is twitter even a fair substitute for facebook? 2/3/2011 9:40:22 PM |

you have to use external services if you want to post pix or vidz "on" twitter and those may not be as secure
and there aren't exactly any "twitter groups" or school- or employer- or geographically-based "twitter networks"
twitter is more of a broadcast medium, while facebook is a full-fledged social network 2/3/2011 9:45:11 PM |

this tells us that the privacy/security surface for twitter is naturally less than facebook. but really, what kind of privacy are you talking about? privacy to not have your personal e-habits sold to advertisers? privacy for strangers to freely inspect what you talk about online?2/3/2011 10:08:26 PM |

If you have to ask a college forum for advice on this instead of relying on your own experiences and impressions of the product, I honestly hope you choose answer #3- myspace. 2/7/2011 6:06:14 AM |

Does anyone on here use Twitter?? I always hear it all over the news about some [insert douche celebrity] Twitter. I personally do not use it and am not of any friends that sit around "checking their tweets."
I like to think I have a decent sized network between college friends and co-workers. If this Twitter thing is so popular who the fuck is using it. Personally I have better things to do than get random updates about someone's personal life.

I have a twitter account, but I dont tweet. I just follow various sportscasters/comedians. Something for me to peruse during the day to get a quick fantasy baseball tip, or to see what the latest scoop on the coaching search is.
I think Twitter has evolved into just another tool for journalist/celebrities to reach their audiences;
Not so much a general-public "social networking" device like Facebook. 3/21/2011 11:54:35 PM |

Never use facebook anymore, way too much crap that if you are partially involved in you get really dragged into by others. Plus people post the most useless shit ("At the grocery store with my baby", "buying ice cream. SO NAUGHTY!"... "do I look fat? cause the other day this girl at work..."). Of course it also requires that you accept any coworker or relative that you;ve seen in the last 20 years or people get their panties in a bunch. Oh and don't get me started about not participating in the lemming stream of "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" "HAPPY NEW YEAR!" "HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY!" "HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY!"
Twitter is an amazing tool for knowing whats going on RIGHT NOW. I rarely contribute anything to twitter (much like KInge21 described). I find with Twitter I am checking my RSS feeds less and less because if something really is interesting then one of the people that I follow in that subject area will tweet about it. 3/22/2011 12:15:03 AM |

I saw twitter as the mere definition of narcissism for years until I finally bit the bullet and signed up so that I could DM a CenturyLink tech. When I started getting account information in less than the time I would spend on hold -- I was sold (crow tastes like chicken btw).
I don't tweet either but follow people I find interesting and occasionally check out trending topics. I stopped getting on facebook after family members and acquaintances would send me messages and invites to the effect of OMG SO COOL UR FINALLY ON FB LETS B FRANS? (ngaplz I sneaked in ages go with short lived .edu address now and my privacy settings just prevented you from ever knowing). 3/23/2011 9:38:05 AM |

msb2ncsu and Grandmaster covered it well. facebook's biggest feature is also the number 1 reason people are going to stop using it. when your network gets too big because you have to accept people that you've barely met, the site becomes flooded with noise, so much so that separating the signal from the noise becomes too arduous and you give up on your news feed. when that happens, facebook is basically dead to you.
there are retards on both sites tweeting their ridiculous lives in detail but they rarely have a solid following anyways.
i use twitter heavily - have tons of lists for whatever i want to check on at the moment. news is fucking instant, i replaced my RSS feeds with their twitter accounts for just about everything i used to read, and i made a list of friends, celebs, comedians, family, clients, co-workers, etc. so you can manage it a whole lot easier without having to follow all those people.
but back to the OP.
as far as which network is more secure for privacy, i would choose twitter because you can protect your tweets and only approve those who you want to give access to. facebook can do the same thing if you configure your groups properly or make yourself un-findable through the privacy settings. really it depends on whether you want to engage with people, who are thees people you will be engaging with, what social networks are they using, how likely are they to switch for you, are you going to just broadcast or do you want interaction, etc. then you can even make a facebook Page rather than adding friends on your main account if you're just going to broadcast - that's always an option...
anyways, need more details to answer the OP... 3/23/2011 10:43:00 AM |

i believe the majority of people i know are shitty
that doesn't mean their feelings won't be hurt when i deny their friend requests and that doesn't mean they won't make me feel like shit for hurting their feelings upon subsequently meeting them
unfortunately, facebook has outgrown itself for many people. they need to figure out an easier solution for those of us with more than 5 friends i guess...even though number 6 onwards will be shitty...

oh man this girl who never talked to me in high school makes such shitty posts about her fat kids
