Getting ready for an overdue front/rear/transfercase gear oil/diff fluid change in my truck. Has 140k and never been done .
Allot of folks I have been seeing/reading are running Royal Purple 75w-90 in their front/rear diffs and xfer case. Now, this is all fine and dandy and the promise of an extra mpg is great and all, but the shit is $18 a quart. Does the truck really need premium fluid like that or will standard 75w-90 work fine?
I also have an Amsoil dealer close by, any better? 2/9/2011 11:40:37 AM |

amsoil if you're able and want to do something beyond standard
will it provide any benefit in the form of mpg? maybe at the 1/100th of a mpg level 2/9/2011 1:07:01 PM |

Do you actually push the truck in towing or offroad situations? 2/9/2011 3:42:28 PM |

I think Mobil1 synthetic is usually around $10-$11 a quart. What do you need; 3 quarts? Maybe 4? For something you do every 100k or so I don't see any reason to go cheaper than that. Even if you got dyno oil at half the price you're only saving $15-$20. 2/9/2011 4:16:36 PM |

I think Amsoil is way overrated and a waste of money IMO. 2/9/2011 4:22:18 PM |

I dont tow often, but when I do its right at my limit (8k). I tow that weight maybe twice a year for a 20 mile round trip. I just wanted to get this done before I make a trip to the mts pulling a trailer. Plus, its 140k and never been done. 2/9/2011 4:47:52 PM |

In my truck (tacoma with mechanical lsd) people are having problems with synthetic and LSD additive. We are all having better luck with dino oil with the additives. 2/9/2011 5:53:39 PM |

Yup.
I've used it for years and had my oil analyzed on a schedule. No need to pay so much extra, Mobil1 is good enough and if you do want to pay more, M1 Extended is even better.
I go 10k between changes (mostly city driving) and the analysis still comes back great.2/9/2011 11:36:28 PM |
