I'm not saying that I won't drink Laphroaig and I still maintain that it's the worst Islay Whisky. However, that's like being the worst Ferrari. Nevertheless, I prefer the Ardbeg or Bowmore unless I want something really heavy on the peat, in which case I'll go for the Lagavulin or the Caol Ila. Now that I think about it, I currently have bottles of all five of those scotches in my house. I think I'll go have a wee dram or two. 2/20/2011 6:40:28 PM |

God I wish I could afford to be a scotch guy. And I don't just mean, "Boy some money would be nice," I really do mean, "Boy, a range of fancy scotches would be great."
As it is, the most I can manage is the occasional special occasion McCallan's.
Oh, and to answer the OP's question, because NC has/had a charming mix of bootlegger culture and backwards religion that formed an odd alliance to create a system of absurd alcohol laws in this state. 2/20/2011 10:52:29 PM |

Yeah it was Quarter Cask, but at the current NCABC price point I think I'll either stick with Talisker, step it up to Lagavulin or Oban. Ardbeg is on the list as well.
^I'm still a noob and usually stick to blended, but I'm trying to throw in a special occasion single malt every couple of months. 2/20/2011 11:20:13 PM |

I'm gonna be honest, I like a lot of people on this site...but there's not one of you I wouldn't brutally murder for good scotch on the regular.
Whenever I have any I turn it into a whole thing and yell at people who do it wrong (too much ice, ask about mixers, etc.) as though I were some kind of scotch snob. 2/21/2011 12:03:23 AM |

Just finished off a 12 year Glenfidditch last night -- one of the spoils of a trip to Wisconsin over the summer that saw the purchase of several bottles of scotch. 2/21/2011 12:41:07 AM |

If you like Highlands, a relatively inexpensive one that I much prefer to McCallan is Ardmore quarter cask.2/21/2011 12:48:18 PM |

When I took my palate hostage and forcefed myself and entire bottle of J&B I used like half lemon and 3 icecubes. Each glass after I relaxed the mix to where I was eventually braving an entire bottle of JWB neat. Never looked back. Occasionally throw a splash of spring water in there in the least snobby way.
The first time I tried a single malt I could only describe the taste as the way a dentist office smells. 2/21/2011 8:47:47 PM |

^ I recently had a discussion with some friends about Laphroaig and one of them insisted that it smelled exactly like bandaids. 2/21/2011 10:43:39 PM |
