happens to the best of us
hahaha, being on salary is SWEET when it's slow in the office. Unfortunately, they didn't hire me because it was slow in the office. They hired me because they have too much work to do.
What that translates into is..."yeah yeah, we pay you salary...so, you're going to work until the jerb is done"
not that I'm really complaining though. 2/25/2011 4:59:02 PM |

Start with engineering things to last a lifetime.
Stop with engineering things to be guaranteed to break after a certain amount of time.
Start with engineering things to let customers repair broken merchandise rather than force them to throw away the entire thing to buy a whole new one.
Bring these values back and You'll be able to save for retirement and support your family by only working 40 hours a week.
Just like the good ol' days

yeah, it's never slow for me. i'm on too many projects, inevitably at least one of them is always having some sort of crisis.
i do environmental policy research, pmonk. the project currently kicking my butt is for the state of louisiana, modeling the economic risk from hurricane flooding under lots of potential levee and floodwall configurations they're considering along the coast, and under future uncertainty about climate change, land subsidence, population growth in the region, etc. 2/25/2011 5:05:19 PM |

don't know if you're being serious or not here. but things that last a lifetime cost $Texas. cheap Chinese crap costs $Vermont. It's very hard to convince people to pay for quality. 2/25/2011 5:19:53 PM |

I'm being serious. It's worked since the beginning of time, and this breakable method is proven not to be succeeding based on the number of hours we have to work and number of family members that have to work to make ends meet.
Look, we have to basically re-buy our entire life every 5 years. It should be clear why it'd be in your best interest to buy things once.
It's a no brainer that companies will sell less items per year. But they wouldn't have to sell MORE if the company itself didn't have to re-buy their own machinery every 5 years. That means they could sell less and still be successful billionaires.

I can't decide if I would like a 9-5 better than what I have now or not. My schedule now is 8:30-7 on Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:30-5 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and then 8:30-12:30pm on Fridays. I HATE Mondays and Tuesdays, but I love my Fridays. It'd be nice to be able to go home at 5 every day....except Friday. That's the only thing I look forward to during the week. And free weekends of course. I think it'd be pretty hard for me to go back to working a full on a Friday after having this schedule for over 2 years....

Right now I am 8:30am-5pm w/ one hour lunch M-F (state of SC workers work 37.5 hrs a week, so I guess a 1/2 hr lunch is paid!).
With that said, once an employee becomes permanent (usually after a year), then we have the option to work an AWS and/or telecommute. Was thinking about trying to get at least every other Friday off, but may just up that to every Friday since it would be nice to be able to have long weekends! 2/25/2011 6:48:46 PM |

yeah, I'm looking forward to the day when I work a 40-hour week. I think maybe average now is probably 45-50, but there have been plenty of times when it was 60-70+ and I was hitting 40 by the middle of Wednesday, just like you said. Even now, I had to work last weekend, and again this weekend...so yeah, it'll probably be 60+ for a couple of weeks here. 2/25/2011 6:49:06 PM |

You know what I love? 12 hour work days. 4 days on followed by 4 days off with 2 hour lunches each work day. Oh and when i take the "mandatory" week vacation off, I get 12 days off whereas my wife only gets 9 when she takes her work week off.

Yeah, I love the work that I do. I just wish I didn't have to do so much of it. Funding for environmental policy work has picked up over the last few years, but it's still pretty lean compared to healthcare research or defense and national security stuff, so I'm always on projects that are on a tight budget. That either means being understaffed or on a really fast-paced timeline, so it becomes difficult for me not to bring work home with me.
But when you work somewhere with a free market for finding work (no staffing department or managers assigning me to certain projects, you just have to either write proposals for your own work or network with PI's and get them to hire you on the team for their projects), I guess it's better to be enough in demand to be overworked than not being able to find enough coverage.2/25/2011 9:25:35 PM |

Another nice thing about being paid hourly is that it gives your employer incentive not to pile too much work on you. If they really want to you get all that extra shit done, they will have to pay for it. So you either end up with more time (because they are unwilling to pay you to work longer) or more money (because they are willing to pay you to work longer).
