My parents have dwarf burning bush against their house. They're really pretty and don't require a lot of trimming care. They also have some sort of evil monster bushes in their front yard from the previous owner that are horrible to deal with. I have no idea what they are but don't get those

I have Nandinas in front of my porch.
I'd probably go with something else if I replaced them though.

^ lol noted, nor do i

hopefully i'll be able to pull them out with a [big] truck. i'm hoping there's no chance of there being any pipes or anything near the roots. maybe i'll call 811 first.

i'm looking for something about 5' high and 3'x3' wide, and that i can cut into with impunity and it'll still grow back

basically, i neglect my shit and need to be able to significantly trim it back every few months instead of staying on top of it every week

[Edited on March 4, 2011 at 3:01 PM. Reason : what type of bushes are used for topiary? would they allow that?]

I think I would like to have a classic boxwood hedge around my property at some point. I've always thought that would look really good.

Why not some azaleas and just space them out enough so that they will eventually fill in the whole spot. No need to trim them.

Might talk to Roger. I hear he has a nice selection, not too expensive. You can even get two shrubberies to create a two level effect with a path running down the middle.

I second the azaleas. They won't need trimming frequently, once or twice a year will keep them happy. Great flowers and most keep some foliage through the winter.

Also a local plant.

i have gardenias instead of azaleas. The don't lose their leaves, get white flowers several times a year. My azaleas have no foliage on them in the winter.

pick a plant that fits your height limitations.
never pick a bush because you like the bush but don't like how high it gets so you have to continually murder the bush.

I believe this should be "an shrubbery." For your aeroplane.
