Yall need to make sure yall catch this one this weekend. I aint speak on the UFC around here in a minute but catch this motherfucker if yall can. Im gettin that feeling its gonna be crazy. No fuckin draw for this one
It was supposed to be Shogun v.s. Rashad Evans but Evans got injured and Jones stepped in. but I figured Rashad would beat shogun pretty easily and in a relatively bread and butter non exciting fashion. Jon Jones is a wild dude though and that throws some variables into it.
its gonna end badly for somebody, not one of those fights thats gonna go anywhere near a decision.

but if shit go wrong for shogun it will be his undoing for sure, he cant fuck up against this dude.
Shogun gotta keep it standing, jones stand up aintall that smooth, shogun on the ground will just get laid and mif bones gets one elbow through it will just become the forrest griffin fight all over again 3/15/2011 11:46:54 AM |

Would it really be an upset for the title holder to retain his title against a guy who fought just a few weeks ago? I like Jones, but he is still young and has some learning to do. I'd consider it a huge upset if he won.3/15/2011 12:06:22 PM |

So wait, Shogun beat Machida (twice if you count the fight he got screwed out of), Machida DEMOLISHED Rashad and you think Rashad would walk through Shogun?
Jones is 4 times more talented than Rashad

i dont think you understand how fighting works
Rashad owned rampage who beat machida who beat rashad
Rashad beat forrest who choked out shogun OMG
Jones was even in the striking with matt freakin hammil until jones tossed hammil
fact is shoguns takedown defense sucks, rashad would have eaten this dude up, jones better be thinkin the same. cause jones has a smooth takedown, but i think shogun will sweep the dude pretty fast

You might be right but Jones has a wild unorthodox style that make him pretty formidable. He reminds of Silva a little (only in the striking sense).
Rashad didnt OWN Rampage. He won a decision because he had a really good 3rd round.
Rampage beat Machida in a SPLIT decision.
Machida knocked Rashad out so hard Rashard almost broke his ankle falling down.

The point was that the transitive property doesn't work in fighting, just like it doesn't work in any sport, but especially in fighting where the styles and skillsets mean everything in a matchup.
Rashad would beat Rua handily not necessarily because he is a much better fighter in general, but because he has excellent wrestling skills and at worst would lay on top of Shogun for 3 rounds after he easily took him down. 3/15/2011 1:31:46 PM |
V0LC0M All American 21263 Posts user info edit post |
So why didn't he wrestle Machida or Liddell then? Why did he stand up with them? Granted, both fighters have great takedown defense but Rashad likes to throw just like everyone else. I agree that if it went to a ground game, Rashad would have the advantage but Rua is no slouch on the ground. He is a Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt and has several wins by submission. In the last 6 fights, Rashad has either won by decision or KO/TKO. He doesn't submit or choke out anyone so I don't consider his ground game all that lethal. He does have good ground and pound but, again, Shogun isn't a slouch on the ground.
I just don't think Rashad Evans deserves the enormous talent hype you all are giving. 3/15/2011 3:04:49 PM |
jocristian All American 7527 Posts user info edit post |
Because lidell has some of the best takedown defense ever. Can't really explain why he didn't really try to take machida down other than he got cocky with his standup game.
"ground game" means more than just submissions. With Rashad, his wrestling skills mean easy takedowns on someone like rua who has relatively weak takedown defense. Noone is saying he would submit Rua, but it is likely that he would take him down, then ground and pound/lay on top of him for the decision win.

Rashad said it himself why he didnt try to take liddell down and it made alot of sense
all the wrestlers chuck faced always went for the takedown and failed repeatedly, by the time they gave up on it they were physically and mentally defeated and had no choice but to finally stand against chuck
he didnt go for takedowns with machida, to me it was a dumb move but honestly watching the fight Rashad could never go to any range to attempt an effective takedown. Rashad is actually a GOOD wrestler unlike alotta these dudes and doesnt shoot in from all 50 miles out and waste energy he initiates them from striking range and sets them up with strikes. In the machida fight he was just unable to get that range goin EVER. Evans is my favorite fighter of all time but the dude was shook in that fight not shook like he was afraid of Machida but it was clear that Machida was faster and quicker than Rashad and he lost himself and lost his plan, gettign funneled into to trying to counter machidas counters
Nope. 3/15/2011 4:15:54 PM |

I'm not saying Rashad is a ball of shit or that he is a crappy wrestler. However, I don't think he's got more potential than Jones. Jones is still somewhat of an up and comer but I think he will be a legitimate fighter in the coming years. 3/15/2011 4:40:39 PM |

jones wil be a beast no question
right now rashad is a much better mixed martial artist on paper, with jones having the "dangerous" factor
in my opinion
to me Cains rise to the top was much more solid. I looked at cain velasquez and thought "ooo shit this dude is the truth" Jones i just look at as an exciting fighter but he has the ability to be "figured out" if you know what i mean
he needs to be at heavyweight anyway. well see the real jones then 3/15/2011 4:43:40 PM |

Jones is a huge favorite in this fight. Its at -200ish right now but ive heard others say they saw it significantly higher than that at times.
Rua's takedown defense is going to get tested that'll be how he loses if he does.
I just think he's going to keep Jones at bay with his striking. I mean he can beat the shit out of Hammil and Bader all day sure but those dudes arent Rua. 3/15/2011 6:25:02 PM |
BigHitSunday Dick Danger 51059 Posts user info edit post |
i think the double Jon Jones landed on Bader was the most crisp takedown ive ever seen in MMA
it was fuckin technically beautiful, and bader went down easy
thats impressive as bader is a hell of a wrestler, shogun simply wont be able to stop that takedown if jones does it right off a striking exchange while shogun is throwing a combination 3/15/2011 10:51:31 PM |

yeah i just looked into shogun's takedown defense a little more and the stats weren't impressive to say the least. I've really only seen his fights against Lidell and Machida I think now that I think about it...
eh, leaning a little more towards Jones now if Rua can't defend. Also if he's shooting Rua might be a little scared of getting caught with his kicks. When in doubt I usually go with the guy that has the ground game for two reasons... 1) there's a lot more ways to win and 2)because the judges give WAY too much weight to takedowns.
They really need to scrap the 10 point must system it's a total croc of shit. Judge it on the totality of the fight and for god's sake weigh damage over takedowns.
If someone wrestles me to the ground and then I stand up and break his nose I'm walking away a winner in everyone's eyes except 3 clueless MMA judges.
Anyway, this is going to be a badass fight. Not that pysched about the undercard but you never know. Schaub-crocop will probably be entertaining. 3/16/2011 8:03:56 PM |

O I'm expecting schaub to end that walking corpse of crocop
Right now schaub is the better fighter (yea I said it) if schaubkeeps that constant movementand that confidence he's find he's going to beat the snot out of Crocop and the knock him out to ice the cake

really looking forward to this tonight. One thing you have to discount for Jones is that he only had 6 weeks to prepare for this fight after his Bader fight/camp. That's pretty quick to face a world champion.
I think he looks pretty nervous and this may have happened a little too quick for him.
Jones usually keeps people's striking at bay with his ridiculous reach but Shogun can definitely work his leg striking from a distance.
I'd look for Jones to try to get this thing to the ground ASAP where he can overpower him. I don't really see how Shogun can stop the takedowns so he better be able to find a way to stand back up without taking too much damage.
Cheering for Shogun. I think Jones is rightly the favorite but 2:1 is a bit too high I think. 3/19/2011 11:20:24 AM |

Quote : | "Eat your heart out Bob Reilly. Mixed martial arts is a lot more than a money grab viewed by savage fans; it can be a real life saver. Today in the streets of Paterson, N.J., Jon Jones and his trainers applied their gym techniques when they spotted a robber, chased him down and subdued him Saturday afternoon.
Jones, who is fighting Saturday evening in Newark for the UFC light heavyweight title, was on his way to meditate in front of a waterfall in northern New Jersey. Jones, along with Greg Jackson and Mike Winklejohn, spotted the suspect breaking into a car and stealing some objects. The group shouted at the robber and he took off.
Jones, Jackson and Winklejohn pursued him on foot. Jones, the youngest of the group at 23, caught up to the robber and tripped him to the ground. Jackson told Yahoo!'s Kevin Iole that Jones "foot swept" the suspect.
With the robber on the ground, Jackson began yelling to his fighter to stay away. Once the trainers caught up to robber, he tried to get up. Jackson said he "double-legged" him and jumped on top applying an arm bar. Winklejohn went for the other arm to make sure he didn't have a weapon. In the scuffle, the robber was bloodied. The trainers said some blood got on their pants. Shortly afterward, the police arrived to arrest the suspect.
This is the second time in the last month an MMA-related move was used in a high-profile story to subdue a criminal. Joe Lozito, New York-area laborer, tackled an alleged murderer on a New York subway.
Reilly is the New York assemblyman leading the crusade to keep MMA events out of New York State. The ban by New York is a big reason why the UFC has placed several events just a few miles away across the Hudson River in Newark's Prudential Center. Jones faces Mauricio Rua in the main event of UFC 128. He'll step into the Octagon roughly 7 1/2 hours after his run-in with the robber.
Jackson did mention that Jones eventually reached that Paterson-area waterfall.
"It was an incredibly beautiful waterfall," said Jackson." |

all i can say is.... goddamn
Did shogun even land a single blow? That was complete and utter destruction. Completely owned the standup. The reach was so mismatched it looked like rua was fighting his big brother. Even when the fight went to the ground, shogun had a hard time dealing with his length and size.

jesus christ, i didnt realize jones would be that much bigger than shogun. That looked like a video game or something, what the fuck could rua even do.
Another awful under card, that makes two in a row.
If UFC wants to continue growing they need to get people who want to fight out there. Even the bantamweight guys just fucking danced the whole time. Up the knockout/submission bonuses and reduce the appearance fees.
I think its interesting that lately the free televised events have been terrific and the PPV's have been so underwhelming. It's the guys trying to stick around that are willing to make an exciting fight.
I dont see Jones losing for a LONG time, Im surprised Evans is willing to fight him he said all along he wouldn't.

the only way you keep your job is to WIN. thats why people are being so damn cautious nowadays. It is hurting fighting
hell PRIDE never cut anybody because they didnt give a damn if you lose just put on a good show and youll get another fight as soon as you wanted to.

exactly, unless its a title fight there should be way less emphasis put on winning.
Now if the guy is getting knocked out in 2 minutes every fight thats a different story.
But why penalize Kampman for losing to sanchez when its a badass fight.
