"400-pound marathoner celebrates nine hours, 48 minutes and 52 seconds of 'pure hell'

Kelly Gneiting, a former national champion sumo wrestler, finishes the L.A. Marathon and may have set a Guinness record.

After slowly but steadily working his way through a 26.2-mile course drenched by driving rain, mammoth distance runner Kelly Gneiting finished Sunday's Los Angeles Marathon in nine hours, 48 minutes and 52 seconds, probably establishing a Guinness world record for someone his size.

"I did it, but it was hell," Gneiting, 40, said, shortly after crossing the finish line in Santa Monica. "Pure hell." Featured in a Times profile last week, Gneiting is a former national champion sumo wrestler with a 60-inch waist who weighed in just before the race at 400 pounds.

Gneiting completed the marathon by jogging and walking and said there were several times when he feared he wouldn't finish, particularly when his rain-soaked feet developed terrible blisters.

"My feet were on fire," he said. "Twice, blisters popped and just about brought me to my knees.... But I kept going."

Despite his slow pace, Gneiting accomplished his two main goals. He improved his time from the only other race he entered, the 2008 L.A. Marathon, which he completed in 11 hours, 48 minutes and 16 seconds.

He also appears to have set a Guinness world record for heaviest person to complete a marathon. Guinness representatives must review Gneiting's results before certifying the record."

Just finishing is the accomplishment. I'd love to do something like that, but I'm sure they would close up shop long before I'd ever cross the finish line.

It would probably take me 8 hours, after I walked the entire thing and sat down for some lunch at Burger King about half way though, so good for him.

Anyone on this site who has two legs could finish a marathon in 9 hrs and 48 min. That is a slow walk. Good for him for getting out and being active, though.

The dude that won the marathon was impressive. It was his first marathon EVER and he totally destroyed everyone. Even the announcers were doubting him halfway through the race saying things like "When, not IF this guy hits the wall, he'll likely end up outside the top 10, IF he even finishes the race at all....it's not possible to run this course at his pace" blah blah blah. He shut them up and proved them wrong. I almost shed a tear watching him finish the race.

He beat the previous course record by like 2 minutes. And it was raining/flooding for basically the entire race.

define heavy. I mean 400 pounds is a hell of a lot of weight. And even if he walked the entire time, carrying 400 pounds around for almost 10 hours is impressive. Now with that being said and the fact that he was a former sumo wrestler I would assume he was a lil more in shape than your average 400 pound person.

B/C i don't think you could find an average 400 pound person who could walk for 10 hours straight....

Yes, there are announcers for marathons that are televised

There's also usually an annoying dude at the finish line with a microphone who updates everyone on where the leaders are and what their projected times are, etc.

I was originally planning to run this yesterday, and it would have been absolutely miserable; we got over 3 inches of rain, with a disproportionate amount of it in the morning. I am so glad I decided to run a different one two weeks ago instead.

With the weather conditions as they were, hypothermia becomes a very real concern, so I'm impressed with Big Guy for not giving up for ten hours anyway, but especially for sticking with it when you're going so slow that maintaining a high core temperature is an added challenge.
