Had one (directly into the joint) about 7 hours ago, now my upper arm (where my bicep connects to the shoulder) is killing me, I literally can't move my shoulder without being in significant pain.

Is this normal?

I would assume that having a needle crammed into your shoulder would cause some discomfort, yes

They just injected a good amount of fluid into your shoulder. It will take time for it to absorb and will be tender for a few days cause there is really no room for the fluid to begin with.

I had one in the top of my foot and that hurt so god damn much when they injected it. It got better over the course of a few days

^or you can always just do that

getting a shot in a tendon is prolly gonna leave things irritated for awhile

I don't have easy access to the doctor who did the injection. I'd have to schedule an appointment with my primary doctor who can call the hospital where the doctor who did the injection to get an answer. Or I can try calling the 24 hour nurse help line and be on hold forever.

Yes, normal for a cortisone injection. Should be better by the morning. Delayed onset of pain is usually because analegesics wear off.

I'd say it's not normal. I've had a cortisone shot into my shoulder and while it was uncomfortable I wasn't in a lot of pain and was back at the gym the following day.

whatever dose is given for an inflamed rotator cuff is what I was given. Oh and I weigh about 200lbs

they shot me with cortisone a few years ago (wrist) and i swear my wrist hurt more than it ever had x100 for the next day or two. But after it really started kicking in it was loads better.

For me they eyeballed it. Ultimately it did no good b/c the shot was for an inflamed rotator cuff that turned out to be a misdiagnosis Now when I had an MRI and they injected some liquid into my shoulder they used an X Ray machine to make sure they injected it into the right places. Seemed kinda weird to have the X Ray machine going steady for like 5 minutes

See, my injection was for a SLAP tear. I have received two MRIs confirming the diagnosis, and they tried 1.5 years of physical therapy before this damn shot. Everything I read says the only way to repair a slap tear is through surgery. It doesn't help that I had to drive 4 1/2 hours for the shot either.

did they ask you about doing surgery? most competent orthopaedics will phrase it that if it's interfering with your daily life, and conservative methods fail, then they would recommend surgery

ftr, my wife had a slap tear that they think she sustained in high school and lived with it for 7 years without any kind of treatment, and ultimately got surgery. she's good as new now

The doctor said I need to wait 6-8 weeks to see if this shot does anything (so far it hasn't) If it doesn't, I need to drive another 4 1/2 hours back up to see this guy and get a follow up visit and he might recommend surgery at that point in time.

The shot won't do anything. It just helps with inflammation...it's not gonna heal the torn tissue. I had surgery last September for a SLAP tear and my previous comments in this thread are with reference to that occurence.

FYI I have no idea how I injured my shoulder, my best guess is a partial dislocation that occured 13 years ago (despite it not bothering me much till 12 years later). My surgeon confirmed that it was an old injury based on the MRI. Bottom line is that eventually it will bite you in the ass, so it's best to make plans to have it repaired...and the younger you are the faster the recovery.

I mean let them do their thing, but you can't fix a tear without surgery (unless maybe you can if its a really tiny tear?). Also, my tear was actually worse than what the MRI showed, so those things aren't ironclad. My tear was about 190 degrees around (if you think of the labrum cartilage as a 360 degree circle). Ultimately you don't know till you open'er up

Anyone ever had a frozen shoulder? I did / do. Cortisone shot helped (after feeling worse for 2 days), and now regaining range of motion through physical therapy and gradual unfreezing.

I believe that to be incorrect. I typically slept on the opposite / unaffected side even before the first emergence of symptoms.

But now I can lie on the affected side without crippling pain for the first time in a while, so I call that progress!

^My dad had that a few years ago (I think it was actually when he was 41 too, lol). your boss play tennis or racquetball or golf or something like that?

I don't think he ever took shots, but he did physiotherapy and some regular exercises. had to quit sport-ing for a bit

so I got a cortisone shot into my rotator cuff. It has made it damned near OK. There are some things I avoid in the gym, but that's about it.

I know it's just a band-aid on a bullethole. The idea was basically that my shoulder has a lot of arthritis (the surgeon was a little taken aback after having seen the imagery to see ME and realize I'm only 44, haha.) It also has a partially torn rotator cuff (supraspinatus). The cortisone shot was to try to alleviate the rotator cuff pain and see how much was remaining due to the arthritis. If it resolved most of it, then that means rotator cuff repair would likely be a good course once it wears off. If not, I could either just deal with it or have a full shoulder replacement.
