Has anyone here taken either of these courses over the summer? Im trying to figure out if it would be worth tying to take these classes.
I know Mazzoleni is teaching both durring the first session and Juei Tu for the second 3/29/2011 7:22:05 PM |

Were you thinking CE or MAE solids/dynamics? If it is MAE I'd recommend not taking both over one summer unless you are really confident that you can handle them. They ARE weed out courses for engineering so even in a regular school semester they are a lot of work... not necessarily difficult if you know your stuff going in, but they will be time consuming. 3/30/2011 9:02:18 AM |

MAE, I was thinking about taking one per 5 week session. What really sucks is if I dont take them over the summer, it pushes me back one year because Im in aerospace and most classes are only offered once a year. 3/30/2011 11:02:48 AM |

the only stuff thats really difficult in dynamics is the stuff at the very end, which you won't even get to if you take it during the summer. i would take both over the summer if you can, but definitely dynamics.
just keep in mind you will have to do homework most nights and will likely have some kind of quiz or something every week.

That's pretty standard for summer courses
With the time delay, I'd say go for it. You get a week or two to figure out if you can handle it, though I'm not sure how that works out with tuition if you drop a class3/30/2011 5:41:06 PM |

They're both doable in a 5 week session. I took fluids and solids in a 5 week session together and that was pretty miserable. If you're looking to do well in them, taking them individually for each session would probably be fine.
FWIW, I noticed that I was much more motivated that next fall because of the compressed schedule. 3/30/2011 7:31:27 PM |

Thanks for the replies everyone, Im definitly going for it. Does anyone know who Fen Wu or Andre Mazzoleni is? These are the two that I have choose from for dynamics. Just looking for a heads up on who to go with if anyone has experience with either.
Thanks 3/31/2011 12:48:32 PM |

Try the school tool here for reviews school.aspx or if that doesn't work, try to find a ratemyprof.com website or something. 3/31/2011 1:22:08 PM |

I had Mazzoleni for dynamics over the summer. He's kind of dull during lectures but he's very willing to go out of his way to help and his tests were very fair. He's just a good guy in general. If you do the homework he assigns (which is alot) then you should be fine. I had fen wu intially for vibrations but dropped him because he is extremely hard to understand. I took mazzoleni again the next summer for vibrations and had a similar experience to his dynamics class. 3/31/2011 2:14:54 PM |

Avoid Wu at all costs. I had him for dynamics and he was literally one of the worst professors I've ever had, and that's saying a lot coming from a graduate of the MAE department. 4/1/2011 9:52:25 AM |

I took both these classes plus some materials science course over the summer.
It was ball crushing, but I made it through with B's and a C. Definitely do-able, but you can forget vacation and working on the side. You'll probably want to lock it down and get serious about surviving the class. 4/1/2011 10:52:46 AM |
