So the Wii 2 is going to be announced at e3. Sad that by the time I retire my Wii the only game I'll still be playing is the same from the day I bought it, Wii Sports.
It wouldn't be very nintendo-like to just have it be the Wii with HD graphics, will it be controllerless like the Kinect or just a refined Wii controller with new graphics (like the Move).
Or will it be something completely new? Probably not if they are saying its going to be the Wii 2. 4/14/2011 5:29:29 PM |

As great as the Wii was, it got old quick. My wife and I bought one from target, played it for a couple months, and ended up returning it. (Thank you 90 day return policy)
After a month or so of frequent play, there just weren't enough decent games to really enjoy it. Some better games have come out since, but it just hasn't had the same appeal as Xbox & PS3.

I really hope they go for a robust online offering this time as well as a better overall interface. IMO that's really what was lacking with the Wii. Price-point will be another area to watch.
In terms of games, I'm really not sure what people were expecting from the Wii this generation. We all knew the Wii would be about first party games, and I got exactly what I expected for less than half the price of the other consoles (bought mine at launch). And the terminology "few quality titles" could easily be extended to the other two consoles with the right qualifications ("few quality titles that aren't already on the PC and aren't FPS" is how I look at things). To each their own.
Here's to hoping that Nintendo can actually learn to be a bit more flexible this time around. 4/14/2011 7:09:39 PM |

I agree to some extent, but I can count on one hand the amount of games I really enjoyed on the wii. And I've returned/resold all those games except for wiisports/wiiplay because they werent that great.
Mostly my wii is only used for netflix/occassionally guitar hero/wiisports.
It is nintendo though, I cant imagine this will just be a rehash of the wii, but it does strike me as odd they have said its going to be called the wii2. I don't really see where they go from here unless its completely new or just a rehash. 4/14/2011 7:12:33 PM |

Quote : | "According to multiple reports today, Nintendo will reveal a new console at E3 this coming June.
Game Informer first reported that the console is capable of running games at "HD resolutions." Our sources have said the the console is significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo's intent is to recapture the hardcore market. Another source said it is capable of 1080p resolutions.
Nintendo is reportedly showing the console to publishers to garner interest for a late 2012 launch.
Additional sources tell IGN that Nintendo will release a pre-announcement this month with a full reveal expected at E3 and that the console will be backwards compatible with current Wii software. " |

HD "resolutions"? Ummm ok. My Wii basically is basically dead until Zelda: Skyward Sword comes out.
Whatever the new system is, it can't rely on novelty to sell it to old people/women, so it's no surprise they're trying to get back hardcore gamers (assuming that's true).
I also hope for a better online infrastructure. WiiWare is a fucking joke, it has had maybe 4 or 5 noteworthy titles and the rest is utter crap.

They've got an uphill climb to get 3rd party devs back on board. If you think about the Wii's current lineup, there aren't very many quality titles outside of 1st party, and even less of those sold any significant numbers.

Right now, Wii2 is just the codename from what I understand. Its still not officially announced by Nintendo, so the sites are going with whatever catches the viewer's eye.
Then again, they might call it Wii2. Nintendo is all about keeping its brand names when they are popular. See Nintendo/Super Nintendo (Famicon, Super Famicon). That ended with Nintendo64, which did not perform as well. Then there was the Game Boy which had a billion hardware revisions. Nintendo wasn't sure if Dual Screens would catch on, so that got called Nintendo DS as opposed to GameBoy DS as originally planned. If it tanked, it wouldn't kill the GameBoy line.
Thinking back on games, strangely, I think I would put three third party games as my favorites on the Wii. Zack and Wiki, Muramasa, and Rune Factory Frontier. 4/14/2011 7:23:27 PM |

For me, the Wii was almost exclusively for first party titles. Although I did really enjoy Boom Blox and Zack and Wiki.
still pissed they managed to ruin Mario Kart though.

there was nothing wrong with it, per se, but there hasn't been a ZOMGICANTQUITPLAYING! zelda since oot/mm
it was incredibly easy for me to play a bit and forget it about for a week or more
personal opinion, i know...but i bought the GC and wii for the sole purpose of playing zelda and every other game that was good for each console was a bonus...the GC was a joke (IMO), but the wii was cool because it was innovative (at the time)...the number of worthwhile games for each console has been kind of sad (again, IMO)

An HD touchscreen on the controller means that it's gonna be $texas just to get a new controller. It will be like each controller is a small DS. I could see it being cool under the right circumstances but the pricetag will obviously be an issue, especially if they are favoring the hardcore gamer and good graphics this time. 4/16/2011 3:00:21 PM |

So I guess the idea is to do something like the Dreamcast tried to do with Sonic/Chao. You can play the main game, then take the controller with you to use as a hand held console to play mini games.
And yeah, I'm already starting to imagine the price tag for walking out of the store with the console, one game, and an extra controller.
^And they'll have super cheap quality 3rd party controllers where the screen blinks out and never comes back on 30 minutes after you take it out of the package.

This is a terrible idea, and that controller has GOT to be a mock-up. Looks like just a mashup of a 360 controller and a PS3 controller with a screen stuck on it. 4/16/2011 7:32:10 PM |
BDubLS1 All American 10406 Posts user info edit post |
Yes, the controller is a mockup
pricing for the controller, according to sources who make hd screens that size, say it will be about 80 bucks a piece
and according to an article i read on IGN, the HD screen is so that you can stream the games to the controller and play them anywhere...just the same as you would on a TV 4/16/2011 7:43:06 PM |

I mean you still have to be in the same room with the console, which makes it still not portable.
I would say hopefully this type of controller is optional, but I'm not going to be buying one of these so it doesn't matter that much I guess. 4/16/2011 8:03:36 PM |

yeah none of this is making much sense, there's probably a lot of more of this to come out and I hope they know what they doing but if they suddenly go some hardcore route against the wii than they are pretty much admitting being hypocritical douchebags with all the stuff they said about the wii being for all gamers, and to me that's going to alienate all the serious gamers that supported the wii4/16/2011 10:02:26 PM |
ShinAntonio Zinc Saucier 18947 Posts user info edit post |
They're trying to get hardcore gamers because (1) that includes their most loyal fans and (2) the novelty of the Wii's motion controls has worn off and it pales in comparison to the Move and Kinect. Having said that, the idea of a controller with an extra screen is absolutely ridiculous. I find it hard to believe they can make anything worth a damn with that setup. As nice as the DS is, one screen was almost always the "dominant" screen while the other was for ancillary actions (most of which could've been handled by in other ways). 4/17/2011 2:41:45 AM |

^ two things with that
One, the is alleged to have been profitable from launch, that is where sony and microsoft are taking losses on hardware, Nintendo has an actual profit margin.
Two, Nintendo's development house is small relative to the number of developers who at the peak would be developing, so you don't get much off the first party stuff especially since those are titles with strong development and therefore probably have small margins. Therefore you need the third party license fees from other games which has seemed to mostly dry up for the Wii except for crapware 4/21/2011 4:27:47 PM |

I was fairly confident when the Wii was released that they were already planning a next generation system.
I gave it 5 years; I'm not sure how long it's actually been.
But how could they have not? It was released approximately at the same time as the 360 and PS3.
