Hurricanes are much worse. NC had a real bad tornado outbreak with basically 1 day notice. A hurricane with the same notice would have killed an order of magnitude more.
Tornado imma let you finish but hurricane is the worst wind storm of all time 4/19/2011 11:35:05 PM |

yeah, but you inherently have much more notice with a hurricane.
most of the warnings for the Sanford, Dunn, and Fayetteville twisters were only issued minutes before the funnels formed. Granted, the media/meteorologists had been saying that we were to have "severe weather", but pinpointing the time and place more than 15 to 20 minutes ahead of time is near impossible with tornados

outer bands of hurricanes can spawn a tornado, but they are usually very sporadic and hard to predict/identify on radar... hopscotching here and there

it is much worse to be hit directly by a major tornado than a major hurricane. A major hurricane is worse overall because it has a less intense effect on an area hundreds of times bigger than the tornado. 4/19/2011 11:42:20 PM |

But people were on notice days in advance, and it's easier to avoid a tornado than a hurricane. And regardless of hurricane or tornado it's not like you can move your house so that angle is inconsequential 4/19/2011 11:43:51 PM |

You have it backwards. People in the entire southeast were on notice of the CHANCE of severe weather last weekend. It was not "imminent" until shit got real. You can't forecast a tornado until you already have rotation.
It is not easy to avoid a tornado either because its moving very fast and you have minutes to prepare.
A hurricane, on the other hand moves slow 20mph for a very fast one and it becomes imminent days in advance of the storm. People have time to get their shit together, board up their home and get far inland.4/19/2011 11:47:28 PM |

Well advanced warning does lower fatalities but can't affect property damage. Kinda like how a fatal car collision is like 80 times worse than a pdo, I'd say an old person is worth like 9 houses or 50 trailer homes and then increase the value as they get younger. A baby is worth like 200 houses 4/19/2011 11:51:23 PM |

Well it can't be completely exponential because of the aforementioned hitler baby effect. Probably 500 houses is the limit 4/19/2011 11:56:40 PM |

Governor rtc407 would demolish 500 homes in order to save a baby mid-delivery
Maybe I'd wait a month to avoid demolishing homes at the infant mortality rate + viable infants

Yeah but without Hitler, the world could easily be a worse place today. People would have never opened their eyes to genocide and ethnic cleansing might not be such an ugly thing in our eyes. Also, the innovations of ww2 would have come slower. We would literally be living in a different world. 4/20/2011 12:05:00 AM |

I've been through the eye of both Fran and Hugo but experienced many others. As for tornadoes I've been 1/8mi from an HP tornado at night so I didn't see it but saw the effects the next day. 4/20/2011 12:18:19 AM |
