How do you feel about TV shows doing a one-time musical episode? Ratings gimmick or decent plot device? What are some of your most loved/hated?

The ones that come to mind first for me are Scrubs (My Musical) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Once More with Feeling). In both cases the episodes were not filler but contained real content and moved the season plot line along.

Although its been forever since I've watched it, I remember really liking the Daria musical episode as well.

Both South Park and Family Guy have done it with, I guess, success.

...well wait I don't know if there was any full-blown musical episodes of Family Guy, just a lot of musical bits.

But South Park has definitely had some success in this field

Family Guy has done several full songs but I don't think there was an all-musical episode. The put on a musical in one episode, but I don't know if that counts.
