I have high school students working for me that can't spell words like sausage and arch. They spell them saucage or arct. Only a select few applicants can spell correctly on their application but it seems like after I hire them, I find out they had help proofreading their application.
I am limited in time, so maybe you can help me by finding a comprehensive guide that lists sounds, phonics, and vowel pairs (like oo au ai ea ou) so I can teach these kids?
Something printable and able to be laminated is a plus! Thanks in advance!! 4/23/2011 6:48:19 PM |

How many spelling bee championships are on your resume? Anyways, any HS kid who knows how to spell is probably too busy learning new words or running their own company by now or something and doesn't want your minimum wage job anyways. You gotta pay for competence, you know

Here: select any of these answers because any one of them can apply to the ambiguity of your arguments:
a. People don't come up to me and give me money because I can spell.
b. Government taxes me because I'm competent at running a business. Nobody pays me to be competent at running a business.
c. People pay for pizzas, not for competence. I stay in business because of competence. Employees keep their jobs because of competence. I keep customers because of competence.
d. Awesome pizzas can be made by employees that can't spell.
e. Employees that can't spell still get paid the same money whether competent or incompetent.
f. There are people less competent than you doing your same job and making more money. See Zuckerburg
g. There is no absolute value on competence. For example, the president, who has a high level of competence and heads a multi-trillion dollar country gets paid lower than an inherited CEO of a multi-million dollar business.

While learning on the job is an effective method of sustaining higher education in the country, I feel like this it is not the most efficient method of learning for the country. This flawed method adds more burden on the business sector to educate its employees which costs companies money and productivity. It would be more efficient on every level from single business entity all the way to a complicated compilation of a country full of business entities to teach its citizens common knowledge in the educational institutes designed to educate the population. This will save time, money, redundancy, and headaches in order to advance society into a leading example of a fine running machine built to benefit each and every person in society who chooses to participate. 4/23/2011 9:58:22 PM |

The only purpose in correct spelling is for written communication and the fact that it is mistakenly used as an indicator of intelligence and education. Research actually shows that poor spellers in fact have average to above-average vocabularies and strong communication skills, BUT they choose to use simpler words that they KNOW how to spell in order to avoid spelling errors. Research has also shown that many "strong spellers" may be able to correctly spell words, but have no idea what the words mean or how to use them in context.
In summary: You don't know shit.

That is why if they are uncertain on how to spell a street name, they can ask... Jesus fucking Christ.
If your delivery guys can't spell "Main St." then you have a point, but if he can't find "dumblinger lane," then it's hardly a reason to ridicule his intelligence.
And if he doesn't know how to spell a street name, what's the big deal? You're smart enough to "help" him out without stopping what you're doing, aren't you?
I don't know what odd names are around in your area, but here are some strange street names that I wouldn't expect any one to spell without seeing the spelling first...

Merbig, i know it's hard for you to understand that I'm not there to manage their spelling or grammar. I am there to make sure the store runs smoothly. Poor spelling and grammar is an epidemic that can be solved before children graduate from High School. I realize that some people who are brilliant also can't spell, but they are rare. I know people like to create artistic spellings of words in their leisure texting, but those people also know the correct spelling. I don't use correct punctuation or capitalization because I'm lazy, but if I had to write a formal report, I know how to use them.
When employees are writing addresses, they must be precise and accurate spelling or else you create a mathimatical probability of error. In other words, the only way to eliminate ambiguity is to spell the name 100% correct, 100% of the time. It gets trickier when the customers don't know how to spell their own street name!!
That said, I am not the person who is taking the order. If someone writes down "Dawfin Ln" there is no way for me to know if it's Daulphin Ln or Dolphin Lane off the top of my head. You get the employee to call back and they ask for the street name letter by letter. They HEAR Calthin because Ds and Cs, Ps and Ts sound alike on the phone. (This is why military uses Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, when spelling letters over the phone) Anyway now we have another problem because I have to guess whether it's Dolphin or Calvin lane. Who the fuck knows? I'm not the one hearing the customer.
To answer your question "You're smart enough to "help" him out without stopping what you're doing, aren't you":
Smart enough isn't a variable in the equation and yes I have to stop what I'm doing to help them figure out the address. It is increasingly frustrating and infuriating when they say they don't remember what they heard.
