Quote : | "Canadian voters have delivered Conservative Leader Stephen Harper his first majority government after five years of governing in a minority situation. Meanwhile NDP Leader Jack Layton was set to become Official Opposition leader.
The NDP, according to projections, made a major breakthrough and appeared to have nearly tripled their seat count, while Michael Ignatieff's Liberals — often touted as Canada's "natural governing party" — were poised to suffer an historic electoral loss, placing a distant third behind Layton's party.
With 70 percent of the votes counted, the Conservatives were elected or leading in 168 seats, followed by the NDP with 102, Liberals with 33 and the Bloc Québécois with four. A party needs to capture 155 seats to win a majority in the House of Commons.
Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe lost to NDP candidate Hélène Laverdière in the riding of Laurier-Sainte-Marie, in what proved to be a disastrous night for the sovereignist party that redefined the political reality of Quebec." |

I'm surprised -- I thought another minority government was the best Harper could hope for. Earlier polls seemed to support that idea. Let's hope he does OK with it. 5/3/2011 12:12:36 AM |

Alot of ridings (districts) split the Liberal-NDP vote and allowed the Tories to win. The Nader effect.
Most of the NDP gains were in Quebec, one wonders how pro-Quebec the NDP will become. 5/3/2011 1:07:48 AM |

Ok? I don't know much about Canadian politics, but I do know that electing people from Alberta is like electing people from Texas here. So basically it's 5 years of tar sands on fire. 5/3/2011 9:42:46 AM |

I think its safe to say that the Conservatives in Canada could probably pass as moderate Democrats here. 5/3/2011 10:00:00 PM |

I just heard on NPR that a lot of the new NDP MPs are youthful, have no political experience, and don't even live in their districts; also there is a danger that if the people of Québec are unhappy with the new Official Opposition, the Parti Québécois (the radical counterpart to the Bloc Québécois) could gain much more traction, leading to the secession of Québec from Canada by the end of the decade. 6/1/2011 6:53:07 AM |

I don't really think we have any other option other than making Quebec our 51st state. 6/1/2011 8:18:46 AM |

Quebec is gonna unite with all of New England except New Hampshire and become a truly bilingual uber-nation of frogs, old sailors, and gay people. New Brunswick is allowed to join, too.
This sucks. Harper is going to have all the leeway he needs to destroy Canada since the NDP has no clue what they're doing and the Libs are worthless (and yet are still the only party with the experience and skill to be more than a flash in the pan insurgency).
People think the Conservatives moderate themselves, but really the only thing keeping them from Bush-like environmental policies is knowing that the left in Canada can actually marshal a base of support worth fearing, unlike the Democrats here who like to make fun of their base.
