it gave me northern. i was born, raised, & still live in rocky mount, nc. haha
i guess because i don't say hill the same as heel, pen/pin, tent/tint, etc. i also say marry different than merry and mary.
my parents, grandparents, etc all speak or spoke with that old school northeastern NC southern accent. not the weird british-sounding one. sometime thing in between. mom says "on" like you say "own".

Neutral
You`re not Northern, Southern, or Western, you`re just plain -American-. Your national identity is more important than your local identity, because you don`t really have a local identity. You might be from the region in that map, which is defined by this kind of accent, but you could easily not be. Or maybe you just moved around a lot growing up. 5/3/2011 1:14:30 PM |

I was born in NY with all upstate NY-based relatives and then raised in NC. Southerners say I sound pretty neutral or slightly yankee and my relatives all say I sound like a southerner. Guess that makes me pretty neutral.

I got Neutral, which is amusing because my out of state friends frequently (oh so frequently) are amused by how Southern my accent is. I think the fact that I know how to pronounce words threw the quiz off. I know I have inflections, I can hear it myself (in recordings, I hate it) and countless people are amused by it, but a lot of what they picked in the quiz must have been words I pronounce properly. 5/3/2011 1:46:06 PM |

But I don't agree with it. Born, raised, and lived in NC my whole life. My accent may not be as strong as some around here...but I definitely have a southern accent. Oh well...
Just took it again and got Southern...maybe I mistakenly clicked an answer I didn't mean to or something. Because I'm pretty sure I didn't change my answers (not intentionally anyway)

I've lived in Raleigh all my life and my profession requires a lot of speaking, so I'd say I have a fairly neutral-southern accent.
When I drink though i've been told it becomes more Johnston county-esque. 5/3/2011 1:54:17 PM |

About the same here...though I didn't move to JoCo until I was 4, I've lived there a good chunk of my life.
Several folks from up north have made fun of my accent, though...and it gets worse when I hang out with any of the home gang for any period of time.5/3/2011 2:00:28 PM |

Neutral, but born and raised in Raleigh, I've never moved.
My dad I think did his best to make sure we never had southern accents... my sister came home from kindergarten or preschool or something and said they learned to count to fayhv (idk how you'd spell it?), and he spent the next few minutes teaching her how to say "five".
Also, one thing I've noticed, especially this weekend at my cousin's wedding, Jersey/NY girls etcetera say "so" instead of "that". Like, they left a lot of things in the bathroom in the reception hall, one woman said something along the lines of leaving her purse there as well, but was was told "I wouldn't leave something so valuable..." Or, it wasn't -so- bad versus it wasn't -that- bad. Which do you say?
Edit: my accent changes when I'm with different people. If I'm hanging around people with deep southern accents, I'm slightly more southern. This winter, I had an Israeli/New York combination accent. Some words I say I almost sound English. It's weird.
