Even though shrimp is my favorite seafood, I have never bought fresh shrimp before.
Today I spotted a huge motherfucking foot long (literally) shrimp in the supermarket. The thing was massive and scary looking, and dwarfed the lobsters next to it.
Decided to buy it impulsively. Weighed in at 285 grams (exactly 10 oz).
How do I cook it? Fry it with garlic and butter? Grill it? If grill, the only grill I have is the one at the bottom.
Come on guys, I have a match tonight super jumbo shrimp in the fridge which will start decaying soon.
Thanks!
P.S. Yeah, I can and will google it, but I am sure some of the amateur/pro chefs on here would have some ideas. 5/5/2011 12:31:51 PM |

I'd be worried about the outside being destroyed by the time the center is done.
I'd probably butterfly it and grill it with an unhealthy helping of butter. 5/5/2011 12:36:39 PM |

really 0EP? really? you claim you bought a 10 oz foot long shrimp, yet instead of posting a picture of that, you post a picture of some knockoff Foreman grill?
1/10, would not read again unless you post pics of the actual shrimp 5/5/2011 12:56:30 PM |

if you grill a shrimp that long, put it on a skewer, head to tail wise. 5/5/2011 1:03:28 PM |

You definitely wanna cut that fucker open and take out the shrimp pewp inside. It isn't a big deal with regular sized shrimp most of the time but with something that big the pewp will be the size of a sausage. 5/5/2011 2:18:47 PM |

I'm pretty sure that is a prawn, not that it really matters. Prawns have segments that overlap like shingles from front to back. Shrimp have a large segment behind the head which overlaps the segment directly in front of and behind that segment. You should certainly peel and devein that monster before deciding how to prepare it. A grill over low, indirect heat may work. 5/5/2011 2:26:21 PM |

I'd throw it in a chocolate cake with some zucchini and fresh basil. Maybe drizzle some organic lemon cream icing over that bitch.
Or just butterfly it and grill it with an unhealthy helping of butter. Damn that thing looks delicious. 5/5/2011 8:37:26 PM |

Sous vide it at 120-130 degrees F or so in butter. Sous vide is normally more exact than that but something in that range ought to work... If you don't have access to a temperature regulator and a crock pot then poach in butter or olive oil on low heat until the inside reaches that temp.
Quickly grill the outside and profit... Marinade in whatever you think tastes good (lemon thyme or capers and sundried tomatoes are both things I've done with shrimp that way).
