A friend of mine drives a Honda, wanna say early-2000s accord, and he's got a grinding noise coming from what sounds like his transmission. Almost sounds like the crackling of a dry clutch (were it to have one), or the vibration of a heat shield, or like there is a loose bolt in his exhaust somewhere.

The reason I think it's his transmission is because the frequency of the vibration/noise coincides precisely with engine RPMs...not the familiar coming-and-going of a harmlessly-loose piece of vibrating metal. I checked his tranny fluid level in the parking lot and it was way low, thought maybe the torque converter was being starved for fluid, and he says it shifts hard/slow/clunky.

Problem is, he's Mexican and speaks very little English...so when he took it to the stealer after we looked at it they kinda gave him the runaround and charged him for something, presumably an ATF top-off, and he's still not sure what the problem is because it's still doing it. I want to help him out, I'm gonna meet up with him on Tuesday to take it out and probably get up under it to see what I can see.

Any suggestions as to things I could look at/for? I don't know shit about auto trannys but I'm good with a wrench and not a dumbass. Or, if someone wants to meet up with us that knows more about it, I could pay you in beer. coughcoughDancoughcough

Definitely the v6 ...interesting. I'll see what I can find out online, is there any conventional wisdom regarding these?
