Yeah, you will probably want to get a road bike.

Depending on the terrain he wants to cover and the distance, he might prefer a MTB

craigslist is probably going to be better than here.

just make sure you check the gear-rings whenever you go look at it. the bottom bracket and crank components aren't easy to replace and sometimes it is hard to find the parts if you buy an older bike.

I have a hard-tail GT Avalanche 3.0 with disc brakes that has Michelin City tires mounted on it. It's in great condition and hasn't been ridden very much at all, maybe 10 miles total. I'll sell it to you for $350 OBO
