Quote :
"On October 13, 2010, President Obama signed into law the “United States Plain Writing Act of 2010.” Thirteen years after President Clinton issued his own “Plain Writing in Government” memorandum, the revised set of guidelines states that by July of this year all government agencies must simplify the often perplexing bureaucratic jargon used in documents produced for the American public. Gone are the grammatically longwinded sentences, replaced with simpler English words, grammar and syntax.

gotta dumb it down. the idiocracy draws nearer.

Quote :
"Unaware of what year it was, Joe wandered the streets desperate for help. But the English language had deteriorated into a hybrid of hillbilly, valleygirl, inner-city slang and various grunts. Joe was able to understand them, but when he spoke in an ordinary voice he sounded pompous and faggy to them. "

The people that run the country aren't stupid, so it is easy to imagine a scenario where politicians use complex words in their favor by leaving room for loopholes that are impossible to interpret unless you obtain the inside information by the creator itself at which time the creator can teeter on whichever line that is more beneficial to his own cause.

I actually had to rewrite a bunch of stuff at work to comply with this new rule. It helps a lot... it makes a big difference in readability if you actually follow the style guide the SEC has now.

You can use a gun to keep the peace or you can use a gun to incite violence. You can manure to fertilize crops, or you can use manure to make a bomb. You can use complex words for being accurate and precise or you can use complex words to confuse.

It's upto the user to decide how to use the tools they are given.

In this case, more harm was being caused using complex words and therefore it had to be changed.

Once simpler words are mastered to be abused or exploited, then there must be a reasoning body to realize it and change it.

I'd like to call it steering. When you drive a car, you constantly have to make corrections over time in order to stay within the lines. A successful driver will bounce between the lines from side to side but never cross it.

not by the time they're done with us

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspeak

I said earlier that the decadence of our language is probably curable. Those who deny this would argue, if they produced an argument at all, that language merely reflects existing social conditions, and that we cannot influence its development by any direct tinkering with words or constructions.

Pretty sure what you posted is an example of what happens when you cross the line and there is no corrective measures in place.

It's an allusion to Newspeak.

I'll give you some time to wrap your mind around it.

You're welcome.

who decides what is simple and plain?

i have friends who are 26, 27 years old who still spell definitely "defiantly" and can't distinguish youre and your

(and im not talking about accidentally putting "their" instead of "they're", they legitimately do not know the difference)

i mean i used the word statute in a conversation a few days ago and then had to define it.

i thought that was pretty simple and plain.
