Quote : | "The ways some people are using their phones today could increase their risk of developing breast cancer and other diseases tomorrow. Cell phone’s microwave radiation seeps directly into soft fatty tissue of the breast. It’s too late for Andrea X, a young active mother of three from Southern California. For more than six years, this vegetarian and runner drove her children everywhere, with her cell phone tucked snugly into her sports bra. She used her hands-free headset and was on the phone for four to five hours a day. Often her chest or ear would redden, but she thought little of it. This spring she developed a malignant tumor right where her phone had sat on her breast. No one in her family has ever had breast cancer. " |

I am no oncologist, but wouldn't it make sense to cross-reference different communication device wavelengths with the wavelengths known to disrupt DNA and cause cancerous cells in in various tissues? Sort of like resonance frequency in different materials impacted by soundwaves. 6/1/2011 1:12:56 PM |

If I'm going to talk to someone for 4-5 hours I would prefer to be there in person.
I don't even like talking on the phone for 4-5 minutes most of the time. 6/1/2011 1:15:58 PM |

they mention her skin turning red like that's evidence of a carcinogen Pretty sure that if you smoosh a phone or anything else on your skin for 5 hours it will turn red 6/1/2011 1:17:20 PM |

This issue is just ridiciulous. Everything in varying amounts can cause cancer. Deal with it. 6/1/2011 1:23:12 PM |

cancerous cells periodically pop up in a normal person's body throughout their lifetime from various things - gamma rays from outerspace naturally seeping through the ozone during a solar flare, etc. - it's the immune system that identifies these mutated cells and kills them. God willing we all have healthy lives and be grateful for each day because as said, many things we come into contact with on a daily basis can cause cellular anomalies and potentially harmful side effecfts that we normally recover from without ever knowing it 6/1/2011 1:26:17 PM |

People die everyday from calling and texting while driving. That should be the real concern here.
The WHO is just pointing out is that there should be a call for more research, not that cell phones actually cause cancer.
Quote : | ""When we as consumers hear 'possibly carcinogenic,' we freak," Brawley says. "But the data is not at all certain, and needs further study. There are probably far more people killed in car accidents caused by cellphones than from brain tumors caused by cellphones."" |

Shit like this will only continue. As we use and depend on more and more electronic devices day in and day out we'll be around and exposed to greater amounts of radiowaves.
And on a related note to this thread, when I'm driving around I keep my cell phone wedged under my thigh near my crotch. I do this b/c I can never hear it right and that's a good area to notice if something's vibrating

Cell phone radiation levels
Quote : | "What it all means A cell phone's SAR, or its Specific Absorption Rate, is a measure of the amount of radio frequency (RF) energy absorbed by the body when using the handset. All cell phones emit RF energy and the SAR varies by handset model.
For a phone to receive FCC certification and be sold in the United States, its maximum SAR level must be less than 1.6 watts per kilogram. In Europe, the level is capped at 2 watts per kilogram, while Canada allows a maximum of 1.6 watts per kilogram.
The SAR level listed in our charts represents the highest SAR level measured with the phone next to the ear as tested by the Federal Communications Commission. Keep in mind that it is possible for the SAR level to vary between different transmission bands (the same phone can use multiple bands during a call), and that different testing bodies can obtain different results. Also, it's possible for results to vary between different models of the same phone--as in the case of a handset that's offered by multiple carriers. CNET lists the exposure for voice calls only; the SAR for data use can differ. " |

my mom sends me these articles because I told her not to worry about it http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/05/20/gupta-cell-phones-brain-tumors-and-a-wired-earpiece
everyone compares it to cigarettes, and says better safe than sorry and mentions the interphone study
i say w/e i don't talk enough to make it something i need to worry about, you get "irradiated" everyday by all kinds waves (radio, wifi, cell towers, power lines) - whats one more? 6/1/2011 1:44:42 PM |
