Popular rapper criticizes fellow Chicagoan
Quote : | "My fight against terrorism, to me, the biggest terrorist is Obama in the United States of America. I'm trying to fight the terrorism that's actually causing the other forms of terrorism. You know, the root cause of terrorism is the stuff the U.S. government allows to happen. The foreign policies that we have in place in different countries that inspire people to become terrorists." |

Lupe speaks the truth here; terrorism is a predictable consequence of U.S. foreign policy. If you want to reduce or eliminate terrorism in the long run, we have to change policies. I'm glad to see that Obama is being called out for his warmongering.6/9/2011 4:17:00 PM |

Stunning logic, man. Who knows what problems we would have, because that would have been an entirely different timeline.
We had a revolution because the British government was oppressive. Thomas Jefferson had this to say concerning foreign policy:
Quote : | "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations; entangling alliances with none." |
How does that match up with our current foreign policy?6/9/2011 4:27:27 PM |

C'mon, man - you can't be honest and get elected. It's all about conning the people into thinking you're a good person without them knowing what you actually stand for.
Obama has been no different than Bush in regards to foreign policy. He has continued both wars. He has started a new war in Libya, and we we've been doing covert bombings in Yemen.6/9/2011 5:30:14 PM |

lol like anyone cares what some mediocre singer has to say, like he's any different from any other citizen.
also, the way that statement is written suggests he doesn't know a damn thing about policies.

I hate to say it but we're damned if we do, damned if we don't.
Any move towards isolationism is retarded in an increasingly globalized marketplace, yet cultural clashes with the middle east (and the far east to some extent) further complicate logistics, trade, and international law. We're left with the inevitable, and unenviable, situation of "no matter what we do, someone will be pissed at us."
Simply put, there is no way to conduct foreign policy without SOMEONE wanting to kill you. Before the middle east, it was the commies. Before the commies, the mexicans. Before the mexicans, the spanish. Before the spanish, the british. When we were british, it was the french/indians.
So instead of bending over backwards by any means for peace (which in most cases involves such a sacrifice of self-interest that neither you, nor I, could fully grasp it's effect), we do the best we can given the situations we are presented, with a strong preference towards diplomacy but a finger on the trigger at all times.
As an IDF General once told me, "you can do a lot with a smile. You can do even more with a smile and a gun."
That doesn't make us terrorists. It makes us opportunistic and self-serving. Is that bad? Yes and No. Ultimately, the global marketplace (economically and ideologically) is not in the business of altruism.
I do find irony in that the same system that has given him his platform to speak his mind (however misguided it may be) is the one of which he is so passionately critical. But according to him, I'm probably a terrorist too, so what do I know...
Though it does beg the question: What foreign policies is he talking about specifically? And I don't mean "the one in the middle east." If he's going to be so flippant, I'd like to know which policy is so awful...

Two entirely different foreign policies. Ideally, we would let people work out their own problems, rather than trying to determine winners and losers across the globe. I would think Lupe Fiasco is referring to our Middle East involvement - the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, the drone attacks in various Middle Eastern countries, our involvement with Iran through the latter half of the 20th century.
People in the Middle East don't always see that we're there to "help" - they just know Ahmad got blown up by U.S. cruise missiles. If we actually aim to prevent and eliminate terrorism, we have to figure out what motivates terrorists to commit these heinous crimes. This doesn't mean "negotiating with the enemy" or anything of the sort, it means analyzing our own foreign policy and determining if, just maybe, our foreign involvement is serving as the motivation. I believe it is, and we as Americans would be safer if the troops we back at home defending the borders. We also wouldn't be in so much trouble economically.6/9/2011 6:29:40 PM |
