Two dead in less than a week in identical circumstances. Both were experience fishermen. Boats found empty in the same location.

Seriously though, guys, wear a life jacket at all times on the water. It could prevent the monster from dragging you under in the first bite.

If there was a monster in Lake Wheeler, would Mayor Meeker tell us?

so let's see. Don't drive north west of raleigh after dark or you might get shot and don't go boating in Lake Wheeler or the sea beast might get you. got it.

Not the best lake-going vessel... Looks more suited for a kiddie pool.

And, you know, the thing about a lake wheeler monster... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'.

I'd seriously consider wearing a vest in a jon boat like that. My brother's 14' Carolina Skiff will list pretty hard if we both move to the same side of the boat at the same time and it can definitely get you if you're not careful. I'll admit that I never really strap on a vest on my boat unless I'm next up to wakeboard or surf, but it's pretty stable.

Its not abnormal for a state to require wearing a life jacket if you are operating a trolling motor or outboard motor

me and allie were actually talking about this this morning. We concluded that there is a hot mermaid living in that part of the lake that is luring unsuspecting fishermen out of their boats to their demise

I know we shouldnt joke about this, and it is definitely a sad thing, but I like to think they went out in search of some mermaid booty and not clumsily falling out of their boat when re-baiting their hooks

I always have trouble understanding how somebody can drown in a lake. There's no currents, no undertow. For fuck's sake, if you're that weak a swimmer, don't get on a boat.

That's a pretty ignorant statement. I grew up around water, am very comfortable in it, and have no problem doing long swims; but not everybody is so lucky. A person's athletic ability drops pretty quickly as they get older. Not to mention close to 1/3 of Americans are obese. It really seems like you're looking at it from the perspective of a healthy young male and assuming everybody should be able to do what you can do.

Obviously you should take some precautions if you're not a strong swimmer, but just because you're old or out of shape is no excuse not to live your life. Be grateful for the health you have because you likely won't have it forever.

^ The first half of your post addresses his post as if the second sentence isn't there. For a capable person, there are no great challenges to swimming in a lake, assuming you're not 1000 yards from land. If you're a poor swimmer, you should be wearing a PFC.

Even a fat fucker can do the elementary backstroke long enough to get to the edge of the lake. It requires virtually zero effort.

"Don't get on a boat" is a bullshit solution.
"Wear a life jacket" probably is, but in cold water you can still get in trouble pretty quickly.

And I've seen fit adults get into trouble within 100' of the dock/boat/shore on several occasions. For those who didn't grow up swimming it isn't always second nature and it's easy to panic when you accidentally suck a little water down your windpipe.

Here's a very common scenario: Wave 1 might get in their eyes, so they stop treading with their arms while trying to clear the water off their face...They can't see and they're now floating lower in the water, using more energy, and breathing deeper as they tread with their feet only. Wave 2 and 3 disorient them more. The next thing you know they suck a little water down their windpipe and panic sets in. After that it's only a matter of time if they can't keep their composure and pull themselves out of it.

Heck, I saw a bangin hot 25ish year old girl get in trouble 5' from the boat a few years back. When people get tired things go downhill faster than you'd think.

Yes Americans are obese. They're fat lazy lard-assed that should have been culled as the weak for decades now. Natural selection will eventually catch up to the fat, lazy, junkfood, fastfood eating couch potato cottage cheese assed fluff-monkeys.....i just hope they don't procreate first....

in my hometown a 51 yr old 400 lb woman just died of kidney failure and it made the paper like it was a fucking disaster. Thousands of people drowning in japan because of a tsunami...disaster material...400 lb woman dies of kidney failure....wtf is the surprise here...? grrr at stupid ppl...

Lake Wheeler is pretty small and the place where both dudes boats were found are pretty darn close to shore. One was supposedly under the bridge which is ridiculously close.

Between reoccurring absurd bacteria levels and mystery drownings I will NEVER visit Lake Wheeler. Didn't one kid's face get nearly ate off from the inside of his nasal cavity by some weird anaerobic bacteria from there a while back?
