He was already on some lists as a member of NC State...

Wisconsin has two running backs on the watch list for this year, when RW puts up similar rushing numbers he is def going to get thrown in the mix...

although he's on wisconsin, he was the savior of ncstate football. Post river football was atrocious and he came in and single-handedly changed that and brough excitement back. Even though we only came back for 3 years, I will never forget him for that.

we only "came back" for one year.

you realize RW only had one winning season as starting QB (not that this was his fault), right?

i don't know many that would put a rusty ass QB on a new team on the heisman watch list. actually, it will probably be the same that put a freshman on a pre-season all america team.

We had excitement in those years
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQPST9uWsIE&feature=related
I remember thinking I would never see anything special in my days at NCSTATE then he came along and changed everything. The ECU game is dearest in my heart because that was the first real glimpse.

The Miami run was incredible.

The FSU run was incredible.

The UNC games were incredible.

Think of all the plays he bought several seconds and ran around until something opened up then bulleted a man in a crowd in the chest for a td.

He's going to open up so much for wisconsin because you have to use your ends/lbs to contain him. If he gets outside its either a big run or a touchdown. When teams play contain defense it opens up the middle run. Wisconsin already has the best middle run in the country so teams can't really afford to open that up. Theres no solution. Wisconsin will have a top 5 offense next year.

yeah i think that post was a little heavy on the hyperbole.

That said, it was obvious last year that he was a bit rusty for the first few games--- we happened to win those games, so it wasn't a problem.

Of course, now he's gonna be playing with other players that he doesn't even know. That's not a lot of time to build chemistry with your O-line and receivers. However, I think if anyone can pull it off, it's RW.

Realistically, he's not a Heisman candidate.

He's not the best and probably won't have the stats to win since they will be running so much and other teams will be out of games early. It will be hard to get two finalists from the same team but wisconsin will have a guy in ny mark my words.

the entire wisconsin offense wont be based on his ability to create plays when the designed plays break down. They have a good o-line (as always) and 2 solid tailbacks he can hand the ball to. He'll be an improvement at QB for the Badgers, but he won't put up the same rushing #'s he did at State.

Wisconsin may have a good O-Line, but I know we always had to run plays out of the shotgun simply so RW could see overtop of them to look downfield (and partially because our o-line was so young/inexperienced meaning RW needed to create more). One thing I'm looking forward to with Glennon this year is his height since we'll be able to run more formations - should help Greene in the running game also.

It pisses me off that he's gonna be remembered as a Wisconsin player not a State player. So if/when we see him go pro they'll probably announce his alma mater ever game as UW.

Good luck to RW, though it's going to be bittersweet as hell watching him next year. He wasn't perfect, but man he was fun to watch. I've never seen a player make more out of nothing than him.

Part of me is pumped to watch him do his thing next year. The other part is praying Glennon doesn't suck

I can see how Russell might win the heisman when he managed a dominant 27 against ECU last season while other offensive powerhouses like Rice and UAB only managed 62 and 42 points respectively.

^^ thats because to ECU, playing state or UNC is like playing in the superbowl. We on the other hand have nothing to gain by playing them. We came out sluggish and got behind early. In bigtime NC State sports, it seems we always play down to our competition. I'm hoping TOB and Gotty can get us out of this mindset.

We have nothing to gain by playing ECU?

If I was coach, i'd kick off any player who had that mentality.

There is absolutely no reason for the team to come out sluggish b/c of who they playing. You come out to win every game. They need to get that through their head and buck up for every game.

From one standpoint, it is correct, we do not have anything to gain by playing ECU. If we lose it looks horrible, if we win, it doesn't mean shit and it sucks we are forced to schedule them as often as we do.

Tudor: Don't blame former Pack star Wilson
BY CAULTON TUDOR - Staff Writer
Published in: NC State

Wisconsin didn't just get a quarterback on Monday. With Russell Wilson, the Badgers got a Heisman Trophy candidate.

N.C. State, on the other hand, got what coach Tom O'Brien, many Wolfpack fans and Wilson's former teammates could sense from the moment he was granted a scholarship release in early May - a potentially frustrating chance to see Wilson play quarterback for a different team.

In parts of two minor league baseball seasons, it was apparent Wilson didn't have major league potential. He may yet take another stab at the sport, but Wilson will turn 23 in November and doesn't yet have a feel for the strike zone.

That Wilson would return to football was a near certainty from the time his batting average seemed to get stuck in the .225 range with the Class A Asheville Tourists.

Just as quickly, O'Brien was trapped in the equivalent of a baseball run-down.

If the coach had saved the quarterback job for Wilson, there's a chance red-shirt junior Mike Glennon, having graduated in May, could have used the same immediate-eligibility option as a graduate student that Wilson used to transfer.

Some Wolfpack fans may resent Wilson's decision Monday, and that's marginally understandable.

Wilson made himself the face of N.C. State football and emerged against long odds to become one of the best quarterbacks in ACC history. He rivaled former Pack star Philip Rivers in terms of sheer popularity.

No one, however, should blame Wilson for taking advantage of the transfer rules and for wanting to keep his football career alive.

At barely 6 feet tall (if that), Wilson has only a slim chance of getting a decent shot at playing in the NFL regardless of what he accomplishes at Wisconsin.

But Wilson has been overcoming the size issue in football most of his life. He's not going to give up on the NFL dream until every door has been closed.

The upshot of the development will be a world of pressure on almost everyone directly involved.

There'll be pressure on Wilson to excel at Wisconsin in a new offense against unfamiliar defenses.

There'll be pressure on Glennon to succeed in his first real season as a college player. Working behind Wilson and on a team that played a lot of tight games, Glennon hasn't seen enough true game action to judge his abilities.

And there'll be pressure on O'Brien. If Glennon struggles or is hurt, a certain amount of second-guessing will be inescapable.

But in the final analysis, everyone did what he thought was best under the circumstances.

O'Brien is getting paid to oversee a program, meaning he had to pay at least some attention to the quarterback picture for 2012.

Wilson wanted to keep playing at N.C. State, but not as much as he wanted to keep playing football period.

Given a career mulligan, perhaps Wilson would have put an end to his baseball career a year ago. But you can't blame a guy for cashing in on a $250,000 contract offer, either.

There are ramifications galore for all parties, but there's no reason to assign fault to anyone.
