by News Corp, who bought it for $580MM in 2008. They were trying to get at least $100MM. I didnt realize people were still on Myspace.

Ouch. I hate newscorp and I still feel a little bad for that kind of lost money. Eh well, I'm sure everyone involved will get a nice bonus out of the deal.

It's a real shame. I think the market could use a facebook competitor that's not evil.

so... what made myspace suck and facebook win? all the lame bands on myspace, or not being initially for college students only, or something else?

You know what the biggest evil is out there?

Linked IN

that shit is SO overvalued and SO worthless and SO evil if it ever actually took off

because their whole business model is collecting statistics on who's googling you...scary

it's a direct threat to my hobby of anonymously googling people

Considering that their Revenue last year was only $2B, I would say they are slightly overvalued. But not as much as LinkedIn, but I think most investors realize they are overvalued.

Facebook has started to display some monopolistic tendencies. The chat/messaging system has been broken for months and there's no support for it. Now, perhaps that's par for the course with a free service, but I wouldn't say facebook has any real competitors in the market pressuring them to innovate or provide support.

Myspace still has some value to the music industry as an easy and free way for unsigned acts to get their music out and heard.

Speaking of metrics on dollars

a single unit of paper currency in America weighs one gram, whether it's a single or a twenty or a hundred, etc.

TRY IT!

All you need is a metric scale and paper tender.

^ yeah that novelty wore off because now the profit is being driven by a cleaned-up easy access look to get what you need and be done with it

If you want to think about it, facebook was just a forced myspace template standard that caught on by catering to the college communities and eventually drove out the myspace marketshare

facebook is *WAY* more than slightly overvalued. I wouldn't touch that junk past the IPO day with a 10-foot pole. They're one good privacy suit or data breach from their stock getting down to penny stock status.

^Yah, when your valuation is 45x revenues you might be more than slightly overvalued. I was being a little sarcastic there.

^ it's not always about revenues though - it's also about projected revenues from advertisers and the value of the data that they've already mined

I don't think that facebook is overvalued as much as data mining in social media itself is a huge bubble

If Zuckerberg wants to know that my facebook statuses and comments usually focus on farting and calling people names then he is welcome to that data for years to come

His secret biometric recognition project to score a defense contract is where most of his company's valuation is - mostly because you signed a contract with him that he owns your data (When you got your account)

I think it did have to do with the college student thing. Everybody I talked to back when myspace was going away and facebook was getting popular kept telling me, "myspace is for teenagers." Then all of the teenagers I worked with said they only had facebook.

What gave facebook the edge is it was a website where you could upload photos, reconnect with old friends, add 500 people to your friends list, post comments to your friends that everyone could read, or send a friend a private message.

On the other hand, myspace was a website where you could upload photos, reconnect with old friends, add 500 people to your friends list, post comments to your friends that everyone could read, or send a friend a private message.

I guess the only real differences were the graphics and music.

Yeah I still use it to listen to local bands. The Pour House actually provides links to the myspace pages of the bands that are coming to play. That works well because then you know if they are worth paying $8 to see.

^^^^^True. Some people went overboard. What pisses me off about facebook though, is the below girl doesn't seem to have a page. I know her name and what town she lives in, but I couldn't find her.

There was more to her than her boobies. She liked to talk about soccer and so did the other people on her friends list.

local bands and shit need to get off myspace anyway and invest in an actual website. No one wants to go through a cluttered myspace page and it puts the visitor in the mindset that you arent that serious about your career

hopefully this will force artists to either create actual websites or invest in putting tracks on itunes

no purpose for myspace.
