My cousins wife just posted on facebook how much she loved staying home and how good her 18 month old is because "he has been sitting in his high chair for almost 3 hours watching tv."
I'm not a parent yet but isn't 3 hours a lot? 6/29/2011 2:45:18 PM |

Depends entirely on what he was watching. My two year old niece watches several hours of Bloomberg every night and she's smart as a whip. 6/29/2011 2:49:59 PM |

I'm a little shocked at how much many of my friends use the TV as a babysitter. Turn on the right show and it's like moths to a flame. It can't be good to be that enthralled by TV at such a young age. 6/29/2011 3:37:45 PM |

yeah, that can be a bit much of the boobtube for a wee one. It does say a lot about his behavior. I don't know of any male toddler ever being able to do that. But you know what...watching TV is like hypnosis.

wouldn't an 18 month old develop more with a hands on educational toy or something?
i trolled her on facebook a little while and she said when she tried to take him out he said "no" 6/29/2011 3:48:13 PM |

I hate to get up on a high horse, especially when I don't have kids, but I don't think "no" should be in an 18 month old's vocabulary when their parent wants them to do something 6/29/2011 3:59:15 PM |

Well clearly we should let an 18 month old make all his own decisions. 6/29/2011 4:42:27 PM |

It is amazing how enchanted children are by television, even babies.
If I were a parent, I'm afraid I couldn't have a family TV at all. It would be too tempting to turn that sucker on whenever conflict arose or things got restless. 6/29/2011 5:03:09 PM |

note to self: do not let baby watch Criminal Minds for 3 hours each day. 6/29/2011 5:56:03 PM |

Fuck it. I'm asking your niece what I should invest my 401K in.

Seriously. I love my niece, and she is wonderful, and I love having her over. But when I can't get her to calm down, and she just wants her mom, I know I can turn on Barney and she'll be fine.6/29/2011 6:43:22 PM |
