"FALL RIVER, Mass. -- Relatives and friends of a Fall River drowning victim are saying they still can't believe the 36-year-old mother of three's body floated lifeless in a local pool for several days without anyone noticing it and the mayor of the city is calling for a full investigation.

The body of Marie Joseph, 36, was found in the Vietnam Veterans Swimming Pool at Lafayette Park at about 10 p.m. Tuesday after she apparently drowned on Sunday afternoon.

"It has come to my attention that health inspectors from the city visited the pool on Monday and on Tuesday and inspected the facilities. I have immediately placed these inspectors on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation," said Fall River Mayor William Flanagan, who is calling for probe into the drowning.

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation has closed down all of its 30 deep water pools and placed the Fall River pool staff on leave until investigators can determine how Joseph's body could have been in the pool for days without anyone noticing.

Flanagan said he's asking the State Office of Environmental Health to conduct a health risk assessment for anyone who swam in the pool between Sunday and Tuesday.

Xavier Reyes said the pool was packed with swimmers on Tuesday. He said you could see the bottom of the pool.

"You could, but it was like a different ... I don't know if it was the chlorine or the ... people that were there," Reyes said.

Joseph had gone to the pool on Sunday with a 9-year-old neighbor and his family. Joseph and the boy went down a slide at the pool about 2 p.m. The boy surfaced, but the woman did not.

"The boy stated that once he was in the water after coming down the slide, Marie unexpectedly slid down the slide, landing on top of him. He further stated that Marie went under the water and did not surface," Fall River Police Chief Daniel Racine said.

"The little boy went and told the lifeguard that the lady's still down at the pool and the lifeguard ignored him, like it's nothing," said one of Joseph's friends who identified herself only as Chezare.

Officials said lifeguards did search the pool area but only found Joseph's belongings and ID.

The district attorney admitted that the entire scenario is unbelievable.

"That was my reaction when I first heard about this. But as of right now there is so much that hasn't been determined," said Bristol County District Attorney Samuel Sutter

Joseph's boyfriend said her body might still be in the water if it hadn't been for an observant passerby.

"(If) That guy walking by wouldn't have saw her then she would have still been laying there until they opened the pool or something," said Herbert Callwood.

Divers spent the day searching for evidence at the pool. Meanwhile, residents are furious.

"I just don't see how they missed it. Somebody wasn't doing their job. Somebody wasn't paying attention," said Joseph's neighbor Jessica Corbishely.

Until the investigation is concluded, the police are calling it an unattended death.

The state DCR issued a statement saying, "We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Marie Joseph. All 30 of DCR's deepwater pools are closed while we conduct a full review."

Flanagan issued a statement saying, "“My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Marie Joseph. There are no words that can comfort them in their time of sorrow, but I want to ensure her family and all citizens of Fall River that we are taking steps to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again."

That's a strange way of saying things. Fluffy a cat that lives next door to me... and its family came over for a cookout.

I'd say that in this scenario it says more about all the other passers by and how observant they were.

They said the swimming pool was full of swimmers.

That's a lot of people swimming without noticing anything.

Must have been a black recreational pool where they pee in the water.

FALL RIVER, Mass. -- The body of a 36-year-old woman found in a public swimming pool in Massachusetts may have been submerged in the water for more than 48 hours, police said Wednesday.

A group of teenagers who allegedly broke into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Pool in Fall River, Mass., by scaling a fence for a late-night swim discovered the body of Marie Joseph about 10:00pm Tuesday, The Herald News reported.

Police were alerted to Joseph's disappearance Sunday after her clothing, cell phone and identification card were found by pool personnel after the venue closed for the night.

Something sounds fishy here...I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess they'll find out she drowned/was drowned somewhere else and the body was carried to the pool for disposal. I would think these hoodlums who found her need to do a lot of explaining quick.

But until that happens....here's a picture of the lifeguard who was on duty that day.

It's the lifeguards fault. You don't ignore someone when they tell you someone drowned. Charge him with manslaughter b
