25 miles commute each way... but it is 90% highway and takes just 25 min... so cross that out
* college is kept way too cold (between 65 and 70) * students smoke inside the building (not allowed, but since a majority are smokers, admin turns a blind eye) * cafeteria sucks * admin is incompetent and corrupt * no like-minded or similar-aged colleagues * pay isn't great
and the worst:
* students are terrible: 30% don't give a damn about learning, 50% are too stupid... in precalculus, i am forced to teach how to add directed numbers, how to add/multiply fractions, etc. and in calculus, i am forced to teach how to add like terms, how to find the output of a function given an input, etc.

Oep is the least creative person I've ever fucking seen post. You're the guy that hears an idea that someone else said and you liked so you said it and the group heard you say it. 6/30/2011 8:44:27 PM |

- I spend most of my day working on things other people in my department have done and often have to fix a lot of really serious errors/things that were considered. Sometimes these mistakes cost the company tens of thousands of dollars just because somebody, once upon a time (or every day), was lazy.
- I dislike when we try to mix policies with engineering. Policies clash with engineering at the most basic level quite frequently and I spend a decent amount of time having to provide research why doing something a certain way is dangerous and undesirable.
- My raises will be almost the same as the guy who doesn't pay attention while doing his work and whose mistakes regularly cost the company money or waste hours of time with the senior engineers.
- In addition to cleaning up mistakes in my department, I often times have to clean up the mistakes of two other departments that mostly stem from laziness or dissatisfaction with their jobs (the other groups aren't paid squat and they make really high demands on them, so this is expected). This ends up with me doing their job just because I'm paid enough to care.
- People in other departments call you and have long drawn out conversations about something they want to ask you about. This leads to five minutes explaining the issue and less than thirty seconds finding the answer. It's never anything complicated enough to warrant a phone call.
- My cube is on a raised floor that vibrates severely whenever people walk by (unless they walk with a light step). The stompers make my monitors shake up and down a measurable distance (around an inch).
- Inter-office politics end up costing the company money, result in new policies that make no sense and just burden us for no gain to anyone, or they just result in measures that are supposed to boost security/work tracking/quality that end up getting bypassed because they're unrealistic and proposed by people who are completely disconnected from reality.
The never-ending corporate struggle to keep things sane. When you can relate to this clip here you know your life is starting to come to an end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3xhMOXT1Z8

mindstorm, I think you're real problem is that you're not engaged enough. If you were engaged in your work you would help improve these areas instead of complaining about them.

Aaaaaaaaa god damn I hate manager doublespeak too.
But yeah, I've made a new spreadsheet/tool/advanced knowledge on at least one thing every couple days at work for the last month or so and my boss basically told me the other week that he doesn't care if I want to learn certain engineering things and that I have to do it on my own time.
This company is going to love when the economy rebounds and they're left with one highly paid senior engineer and a bunch of zombies who can barely function. 6/30/2011 9:01:39 PM |
